Left vs. Right

One of the first things I noticed while watching S&S was that ET is left-handed. In Regency times, were people allowed to do things left-handed? There were some negative connotations with the left-"sinister" being the technical term for the left. I know that in the early 20th century, attempts were made on the future George VI to switch him from left- to right-handed. Does anyone know?
