According to this book (see bibliography link) as newer furniture was purchased, the older pieces were moved upstairs into the bedrooms. There were fewer distinctions between furniture for living areas and furniture for bedrooms then, so tables, chairs, etc. were useful in both areas. The book surmises that this was how the jappanned cabinet ended up in Catherine Morland's room at Northanger Abbey.
