So if Croft wasn't deputized, he couldn't shoot. I don't know what he meant by "never killed...gentleman." It sounds like a sly Austen bit ribbing gentlemanly behavior...anyone?


I thought that too. I wonder if Sir Walter was intending to come back and shoot ? Thanks, it clears the fog a bit...
