According to "What Jane Austen Ate..." the only one authorized to shoot on gentleman's estate was the owner. Others would need to be deputized, ie. authorized to shoot. So if Croft wasn't deputized, he couldn't shoot. I don't know what he meant by "never killed...gentleman." It sounds like a sly Austen bit ribbing gentlemanly behavior...anyone?
