The S&S soundtrack is well worth the money too. I didn't really notice the music when I saw the movie, I confess. But I bought the soundtrack at Borders after hearing it on one of those listening posts. It really is heartbreaking music. I like to listen to it when it's grey and rainy out. What kind of biologist are you? My husband is an environmental physicist, but his best science mates are usually biologists and geographers. He usually finds their outlook on life more enjoyable than physicists. He has been reading a book called 'The Red Queen' by Mat Ridley (a student of Dawkins) which is about sex and the evolution of human nature. I have been trying to have a look at it too, and it seems it could be pertinent to P&P - there's a lot about how different species, including ours, coose mates. Do you know this book?

_______

In my Norton Critical edition of P&P (edited by Donald Gray) there is a long footnote about wealth and its equivalent value today:

"Charles Roberts (quoted in James Heldman "How Wealthy is Mr. Darcy Really" [Persuasions 12 (1990): 38-49]) calculates that an 1810 pound is worth about $33.00 in current U.S. dollars. (Roberts used the value of the dollar in 1988 in his calculation, and for these necessarily imprecise estimates, his equivalences are still useful.) Mr. Bennet's annual income is therefore about $66,000; Darcy's annual income is over $330,000 (L10,000); and Bingley's about $165,000 (L5,000). Because taxes on income were relatively low, labor cheap, and landowners like Darcy and Mr. Bennet could partially supply their households from their own farms, the purchasing power of these incomes was undoubtedly greater in Austen's time than in our own. Perhaps a more accurate measure of the affluence of Austen's characters is that in 1810 the nominal annual income of agricultural laborers was L42, of skilled laborers between L55 and L90, of clerks L178, and of lawyers L447. (B.R. Mitchell, British Historical Statistics [1988] 153).

Sorry this is so long but didn't know what to leave out. Also my L is supposed to be a pound sign - don't have it on my keyboard.

I wonder a lot about Charles and Caroline and Darcy. Does Caroline's obvious crush on Darcy embarass her brother? He seems to be aware of it but takes it in stride. He tells her that complimenting Darcy's letter-writing will not do because Darcy does not write with ease as she suggests. He laughs off her pseudo-intellectual suggestion that conversation should replace dancing at a ball ("More rational, my dear Caroline, but not nearly so much like a ball")

Bouncing Posts?

Posted by Anna on November 13, 1996 at 19:38:03:

I'm wondering if I'm theonly one who's been suffering from bouncing posts the last couple of days? Several times when I've hit the 'submit follow-up' button I've ended back on the follow-up page rather than the 'your message has been posted' page, and if I return to (and refresh) the main page my message has not appeared. A few hours later I'm able to get through. So far it's happened only with follow-ups - it'll be interesting to see if this new post goes through. I'm wondering is it my system, or a server problem - it seems to happen when it's evening in the USA ? peak time.

Since he and Ehle got so close to the characters I wonder what they think happened to the Darcy's after they were married. Do they think they lived happily ever after?Kids? ect. Of course I'd like to know the real scoop between he and Jennifer.
Also what were his thoughts on Darcy's thoughts during the Pemeberly scene, from the time Lizzie and Darcy run into each other until the time she left the Lampton inn. What inspired "the look".
I have a million more about their thoughts and interpretations in certain scenes but I won't ramble on.
