: Remember the Netherfield Ball? Silly question. Darcy wore knee-legnth pants and white stockings. Who prefers this get-up to the long black trousers he wore in other scenes? Please e-mail me at <RYoudelman@aol.com> I wil post the results of this survey.

I don't recall if any other characters wore long pants. I kind of assumed that Darcy was on fashion's cutting edge.

R&V 5 - still quibbling

Posted by Anna on November 08, 1996 at 19:07:32:

I don't intend to slander our joint addiction, as on the whole I agree with Eric about imperfections adding to beauty - P&P2 in faultless, despite it's faults. However, besides the minor things I noticed on the 10th + viewing, there are a few things that grated on the first viewing, and which I could see no technical or dramatic reason. I'm bringing them up mainly because I'm hoping that someone can point out something I've missed and show me that they're actually essential to the production.

The first I've already discussed - the pointless rearrangement of favorite rooms and miniature portrais at Pemberley. In episode 5 we have another - In Longbourne, whilst the Gardiners and those birds that remain in the nest are having dinner, Kitty says "And I don't see that Lydia has done anything so very bad, either". By this stage we have been shown that by the standards of 1812 it was *bad*, adn I find it hard to believe that even Kitty would not realise that running away with a man and not marrying him would lead to serious probems. any opinions?

To descend to the absolutely trivial - did anyone else feel sorry for Darcy's horse on the ride to Lambton? I can't see any reason for him to hit it - it was cantering along happily and didn't seem to go any faster afterwards. If I owned and could use a video editor I would cut that second - it really irks me!

Evelina

Posted by Stefanie on November 08, 1996 at 19:25:41:

A friend of mine from George Washington University is taking a literature course on "Mothers of the Novel." The novel which they are currently reading is entitled Evelina by Frances Burney. She has found remarkable similarities between this novel and Pride and Prejudice. (She never actually read P&P, but she was one of the many victims of my tape-pushing days.)

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here has read Evelina and if you found a simialrity. I can't wait to read it and find out for myself.

Stefanie :)

Stefanie,
Yes, I have read "Evelina". It's really cute, and about a girl who comes out to society for the 'first time'. I guess why there might be some similiarities is because Evelina's real family is really un-mannered (and poor French), and the man she ends up marrying, Lord Oliver (I'm not too sure, it's been awhile), at first does not really approve of her (she commits some social errors at her first ball being a country bumpkin), but at the end, all ends well.
Just some suggestions.

: What do you think of pleading with A & E to show it on their Classroom Series? They have one morning each week devoted to such things. We could rally and e-mail them like crazy. DonnaT

___________________

They have an hour every weekday morning in their classroom series, and on Wednesdays (starting this past Wednesday) are showing P&P2 one un-edited tape at a time. As discussed in some other thread, they could easily give us the Making Of in 5 minute chunks during this re-broadcast, since there are 5 to 10 minutes left in each hour after the P&P segment is over. But that would be too easy, wouldn't it. E-mailing them can't hurt, but I am becoming convinced that they have a deaf ear with regard to this kind of request. <sigh>

You all seem soo young. You must not be very old, indeed, since I am not yet eight and forty (January next), and I am barely middleaged. As to the suspicious nature of the age group, I would suggest that it is a very fine age group (attracted to a very fine BB).

Young, old, or in between -- Jane Austen's works appeal to all.
