: ... When Eliza asks Darcy at Rosings if he has "not seen her (sister) in town" (these three months), he answers, "No, I have not had that pleasure." Later we see him at Bingley's home in a flashback peering over the balcony at Jane as she leaves the house. In the book, he can get away with this technically because he says he has not "met" her, but in PP2, he says no to having "seen" her. I always felt Darcy was too honourable to lie outright, so is this just a slip-up in the script or an attempt to portray him as slightly less than perfect or something else? Any opinions out there? Thanks, genie

I think it was a slip by Davies, because as you know, he always tells the absolute truth.
I like this scene, because it shows his typical result when talking to Lizzy; he starts out by asking how her family is (nice, safe, generic question), gets and answer, and then Wham! she asks him a question that he is not prepared to answer. He gets out of the conversation as fast as he can, and goes to stare out the window (his usual pretext for saving himself the trouble of conversing with strangers or odious Bingleys). By this stage in his life he could probably write quite the comprehensive essay on >Views from English Country Homes<

: : Amy and I were going for a Regency look. What shall we term this theme you and Hilary suggest (wool muffs and shearing shears)? The Daggency look?
: Either way, I think Henry gets to do the Robert Palmer part!

Maybe the Anthrax look. I don't want to put Henry's nose out of joint, but I thought CF would get that part?

: Darcy says that he knows only 6 accomplished young ladies, I can count only 4: His sister, Mrs. Hurst, Miss Bingley and Lizzy. Can anyone imagine who are the other 2?
: Ayelet

Yes, I imagine politeness would require him to say a number greater than the number of ladies present at the moment, but we don't really know that he includes all those present as part of his count.
The picture makes fun of two girls shosing off their accomplishments, along with their doting Papa and Mamma.

: : I just noticed that when Lizzie walks outside when the sun is shining, you can see the outline of her legs through her dresses. Would dresses have been that thin back then? I think that would have been very revealing for that time. However, they weren't ashamed to show cleavage, so I guess a little leg wouldn't bother them. Any thoughts?
: _________________
: I read somewhere also that young women of that era were known to "wet down" their thin muslim dresses the better to display their figures!

I think that may have been something of an extreme fashion; the ordinary English "country gentlewomen", at least, would almost always have worn a petticoat or two -- though it's correct that in general these clothing styles were much less constraining and cumbersome than those of the Victorian period.

: Amy,
: To approach Mr. Firth without a proper introduction---unthinkable! The true P&P devotees would never cause you the mortification suffered by Lizzie due to Mr. Collins's brazen behavior at the Netherfield Ball. We are unfailingly proper and genteel in word, thought and deed. By the way, could the Firthlisters shed any light on the, shall we say, daggy question? On second thought, never mind.

: : It might just mean that we are almost - heaven forbid - middle-aged? By the way, Kathie Lee came to mind because my 3 year old daughter is good friends with her daughter and they are going to appear with their ballet class on her show Live next week. Some may call it exploitation, but a group of 3 year girls in their tutus IS just about the cutest thing I've ever seen. It also helps you feel young/old at the same time.

I scarcely ever catch her show, but I do see her and she is really very nice. Did you mean Kathie Lee or her mother loves P&P? We have never discussed it but I'll ask her about it now, thanks to you, Donna. It's not exactly the kind of thing you ask people about, as you never know if they're even going to know what you're talking about. If you watch her show, please tune in next week. She'll tell me when the tape will air so I'll let you know. It should be very sweet as in pink as in tutus. Wait till you see Regis in a pink tutu, too. Thanks, Donna.

: I believe that it's largely a matter of copyright; someone must pay the royalties. Our networks do not go to them, but many of our series are licensed to them, as many of theirs are licensed to us, especially on PBS and A&E. In Canada, I hear, they do get more direct from BBC, but then they are part of the UK.

I agree. Eric, I've raved a couple of times about a book called 'Some words of JA' by Stuart Tave. I have a feeling you in particular would enjoy it very much. Unfortunatly its out of print (1973), but the libraries might have it. Tave writes beautifully; traces JA's use (specific but variable) of certain words, (for instance, there is discussion of 'amiability' and 'mortification' in relation to P&P); and he often sees very clearly and unusually into situations in the novels. It's also a book that I find spiritually inspiring. If anyone reads it, I'd love to know what you think.

: Oh, where do you get those cassets? where?
___________________
Your casettes might not have any minutes missing - depending on how you got them. If they were recorded from A&E cable channel's prime time broadcasts, there are scenes that were cut out to make room for more commercials. If your casettes were purchased, then they will already be complete. Or if they were recorded from a BBC broadcast. How did you get your tapes?

: Well I'm here on the udder side of the world in Australia, about 13 hours ahead of SF. Should anyone here in Oz or, if you're willing to fly Qantas to get here, would like to meet perhaps we could get together to see a screening of "Emma" which is currently screening in cinemas everywhere. The only problem would be to work out an easy central venue. Any offers?

I know I shouldn't be talking, because _I_ get to go to the SF thang, but I LOVE _Emma_ (Unfortunately, it is she and not Lizzy which I am more like) and wish that we could transport our N. CA selves over to Australia to hang out with you guys. Won't happen, but we'll be thinking of you. By the way, any N. CA - Bay area types who are interested may enjoy a screening of _Emma_ with free movie posters at Wheeler Hall on the UC Berkeley Campus on Nov. 22 in the evening. I and several of my Austenite friends will be there...
- K
P.S. Candace, you know, I was just thinking...It will be weird when we all get to meet. FOr all you know, I could really be some big, hairy guy! Fortunately for you, I'm not, but it's a funny though just the same, with all the urban-cyber legends out there...

: Mr. Myst. HC didn't seem to like my post about what to wear for our singing! He seemed to imply that a pelisse would not be appropriate (and as you know He is never wrong!) He supplied a link accurately describing the outerwear. Since I was simply trying to be modest in my regard for him by suggesting maidenly garments and did not want to seem trashy like Caroline B. in my enthusiasm *and* it did not seem to please him - I suggest we cast the pelisses overboard, forget the frocks and serenade him in our muffs! (Yes Mr. HC I KNOW what they are!)
: I think that the image of all of us singing with muffs is *just* daggy enough for this forum. Maybe we could borrow a few of Caroline and Lousia's hats???
