: : Raphael,
: : Have you also seen the recent BBC adaptation of Martin Chuzzlewit? It also stars Elizabeth Spriggs and Julia Sawalha, amongst others.

: Yes, I have, and like I was saying to Amy, I thought it was even better than Middlemarch. I am not so sure since I have re-watched Middlemarch on video. I have searched for some time for Chuzzlewit on video and have not been able to locate it, either for rent or sale. In my local Borders, filled with all the other BBC adaptions and mini-series (including a very prominent stand-up display for P&P2), they have no Chuzzlewit. Does anyone know if it is out on video?
: Which do you prefer, Chuzzlewit or Middlemarch? Elizabeth Spriggs certainly is a frequent presence -- she will in addition be in Paradise Road with Jennifer Ehle coming next year.
: Cordially,
: Raphael

It's definitely available on video over here, so you would have thought it would be available in the States too.
In answer to your other question, I don't know. I enjoyed watching both of them very much. I thought Elizabeth Spriggs was excellent, as too were the performances of Pete Postlethwaite and Tom Wilkinson as Mr. Pecksniff -- now theres a name full of second meanings! In Middlemarch I thought Juliette Aubry and Rufus Sewell were superb. I haven't watched either for a while, so I will postpone my final verdict until I've watched both of thenm again.

Ann, yes, I agree. I think Georgiana is the elder by about 3 or 4 months.
Also have you noticed that the age gap between Lizzie and Darcy and Jennifer and Colin is the same. It's about 8 years!

: : : : Speaking of hormones, I wonder if it was Lizzy's going quite berserk which made her react so strongly to Darcy. Certainly seems familiar to me.
: : : : This week, most certainly due to hormone stuff, I awoke and decided to have my long hair chopped off. The deed having been done, I now look longingly at Lizzy's beautiful locks in the scene in which she tells Jane of her engagement to Darcy.
: : : : And Speaking of hair, I thought it was very interesting that Lizzy was cast in such soft light at this point--her prejudice having turned inside out, love prevailing; her rather harsh, possibly stylish, hairdo, undone--soft, flowing curls exposed. She looked so beautiful. Darcy would have loved her even sooner, I suspect, had he seen that hair! (Or lusted, perhaps.)

: : : I undestand. I lopped off all of my hair, too, and sometimes it drives me crazy - phantom hair! Yes, nothing like a beautiful head of hair to reel in a man. I'm told that most men find long hair very erotic...does this constitute a hair fetish?

: : It's interesting that you mention that, since I just left another server for this reason and the new one claimed this would not occur with them.
: In this case, you can really put the strong-arm on them - they must make good on their promise.
: : I guess everyone will know which server this is since for some reason my address posted on the previous message. I e-mailed Amy but perhaps she actually did go to bed.
: I expect so, since it's already past midnight there, and since they announced the winner of the presidential race before the polls even closed out here, there's no point in waiting up for that news. :-(
: I don't know what I did wrong,
: It looks as if you accidentally pasted your address into the "name" field. I did that once, but noticed it before I submitted it.
: but whoever that profane poster is (mentioned by Amy at the top of the list), please don't send any trashy mail to me.
: I don't think there's much risk in this case. If it's the one that I saw, it wasn't mean or nasty - just inappropriately worded for our PG-13 rating. ;-) And there are so many postings these days that they are only lasting 2 days before expiring, so it won't be up there very long even if Amy doesn't manage to snag it.

Just another point. Am I right in thinking that I'm not supposed to be able to read peoples E-mail addresses most of the time. I'm curious because when I read a message if the name at the top is highlighted in green, then I see the address ( ie. I'm assuming that the poster has typed in their E-mail address in the E-mail slot in the form). If it is black, then no E-mail address is available.
Please ignore if this is complete nonsense.
A very confused,

: : Lost this post once, but I shall try again....
: : I only remember 4-5 dogs.
: : Netherfield dog is a Harlequin Great Dane. Large breed dog, square head and droopy jowls which allow the saliva to drip all over your shoes. Probably why Jennifer Ehle was bouncing around so much!!
: : Pemb dogs in gallery: Thin one is a Whippet the other I think was an English Springer Spaniel.
: : Pemberly dogs out front when Lizzy left after dinner: One was a great dane I think, the other I am not sure.
: : Nancy R.

: I may well be putting a spanner in the works, but the thin one may well be a greyhound. I have vague recollections that it is too large to be a whippet. I'll have to check though, tonight!

This doggy thread is just driving me nuts!!! I checked last night, and at Pemberley I think the smaller brown skinny dog is a whippet and the larger skinny black and white one is a greyhound. This shot is so short, that it's difficult to really tell what kind of dogs they are.
Anyway, I went on a hunt to see if I could dredge up any information on the types of dogs that landed gentlemen had at that time. This is what I came up with. Most estates had several hunting dogs -- the speed merchants, such as whippets and greyhounds for chasing the prey, and the bird dogs.
"A different type of hunting (dog) is found among bird dogs. When a bird is detected on the ground, the dog if it is a pointer or a setter, is trained to stop and wait; other breeds such as spaniels, simply flush the birds so that they can be shot..."
That is why I think the dogs at Netherfield are probably spaniels and setters.
Right I've finished my ramble,
Bernie

: : : In an attept to sort this little quandry once and for all, we know that Lydia is sixteen when she marries Wickham (31st August). Now in the film Lizzie corrects Wickham and tells him Lydia is 15 not 16. This is after Lizzie gets back from Rosings (about the third week in May) and before Wickham and Co. depart for Brighton (June sometime). Therefore Lydia's sixteenth birthday must have been between the middle of June and the end of August.
: : : I hope this makes sense.
: : : Bernie
: : ___________________
: : A few points of reference from the book (for corroboration purposes). Vol. 1 Chapter IX . "Lydia was a stout, well-grown girl of fifteen, with a fine complexion and good humoured contenance..." ( Mrs. B, Kitty & Lydia visit Netherfield -- 14th November).
: : Vol. 2 Chapter XVIII . "Her character will be fixed, and she will, at sixteen, be the most determined flirt that ever made herself and her family ridiculous..." (Lizzie entreating her father not to allow Lydia to go to Brighton -- late June ?).
: : So between the book and P&P2 it appears that Lydia's birthday is mid June.
: : Bernie
:
: ___________________
: Your brilliant deduction prove to be completely correct. In another part of the book Mrs Bennet confirms Lydia's birthday is in June.
: This occurs in her speech of delight at having heard the news that Lydia will soon be married. She says
: "And she was only sixteen last June."

: : Could you guys please tell me what I'm missing? I just can't get interested in Middlemarch. In fact, I can't even get half way through the book without being totally bored. What don't I get? Some people have told me that you either like George Elliot, or you don't. Is that true? If you guys (whose taste in literature is to be admired) tell me that it's really worth it, I will endeavour to read it, otherwise, I'd rather watch grass grow.

: Terese -- can't really help you with Middlemarch (either viewing or reading). Heard good things but haven't tackled it myself. However, I was the same way about Gone with the Wind -- I forced myself to finish reading it though I hated every minute and I can't stand the movie. I am a very laid-back, mellow person but while reading and watching (though I only got through the first half of the movie) the possibility of enjoyment was overcome by the urge to slap Scarlet silly. She was such an irritating character to me that I didn't care what happened to her as long as she was gone. (sorry, got on a tangient)

Thank you Raphael and Anne. I think the thing for me to do is watch the movie and then try the book again. At least if I can't get through it then, I'll at least have had the opportunity to experience the beauty of the film. Raphael, you have described it so well that I will definately hit my local Blockbuster this week for the rental.

Ann,
In response to your post yesterday (?), I believe Lizzie isn't wearing the same dress at Pemberley as she wore to the Meryton assembly ball. At the assembly ball the sleeves were above the elbow and the embroidery was of feathery ferns. (In fact there is a very nice picture of Lizzie and Charlotte waiting for partners at the Meryton Assembly ball in "The Making of P&P" in which you can see all the details I'm trying -- poorly -- to describe). At Pemberley the dress she wore had elbow sleeves embroidered with swirls, almost a Paisley pattern. Also the hem, which was embroidered with the same pattern, wasn't quite full length so her petticoat showed. This is the same dress she wore when she was visiting Jane at Netherfield, and meets Darcy in the billiard room.

: But - and this I strongly recommend for repeated viewing - I have put together, at the end of tape four (longing look and Lizzy looking back...)every thing with Darcy on it(from tapes 5&6) so I can get a quick resumé of all the best parts if time is short. And not quite as logical perhaps, after the full tapes 5&6 I have got Darcy from tapes 1-4 in this quick version.
: So I cherish all three versions and at the rebroadcasting did not miss one minute of it though I had it all on tape...
: Thatīs obsession is it not?
