those with AOL or Prodigy addresses to be considered clueless if not outright offensive,
_______________
All true, Joan.
There's more to the story, as there always is. Julie did not do anything wrong that I can see and is very welcome here of course.
While I am not up to date on the latest trouble on Austen-L, I do believe the temporary cancellation of commercial service accounts must be related to the trolling of the infamous delectable one over there. How we would handle her would be an interesting challenge to our commitment to be well mannered. Also there was a recent re-upping for everybodys' subscriptions there, which could be misconstrued.
I don't know, have never even exchanged email with Michael and Jacqueline, but have every reason to believe them to honorarble and reasonable people. Certainly they are forebearing. I am in communication with my other cousins, the Dowager Queen Robin (Firthlist), Carol Rogers (FoF), and Henry of course (where have you been my boy? I hope the flu has not taken you.) We all do this for love and it can be frustrating to be hassled by people who sometimes assume we should provide the same level of customer service one would expect from a public utility or something. You know?

: I spent part of the weekend immersed in the second-most pleasurable
: mini-series: Middlemarch
Raphael, I rewatched most of Middlemarch this weekend as well! I don't like the film so well as P&P but the novel is one of my favorites, at time maybe the favorite. At this point in my life a story about marriage is more directly relevant than a story about courtship. Such complex sometimes dark ideas in that little tale.I'd welcome a discussion of it though I fear it would consume me. Should we do a seperate list? But maybe not til after the first of the year? My ISP is going to kill me.
Amy
P.S. Oh, and Bernie. Yes, I've seen most of Martin Chuzz. Weird to see Julia so sweet. The old man and his swarming vulture relatives reminds me a lot of Middlemarch's Peter Featherstone, Fred Vincy's crotchety old uncle.

I just ordered the book, The Making of Pride and Prejudice from Penquin. I could not find it here in the US. Is the book worth it?

... in fear of wearing my favorite part of the tape out, but I haven't succeeded once. The scene is trully breath-taking - I found myself literally holding my breath as I going through those looks, I shall die of suffocation should they make the scene any longer :)

: Zimei, please duplicate your tape set ASAP so your mastercopy remains in good shape (then when your duplicate gets ruined, at least your original isn't). No fun trying to catch nuances of scenes through horrible tape blips & gray stripes!
Not to detract from the acting ability of CF and JE, but is it not possible the camera caught an eye-opening (on all levels) glimpse of their real-life feelings towards each other surfacing, (given the news items about them as a couple during production)? Reminds one bit of some Burton/Taylor scenes, when private lives can't help but peek out of the actors' "windows of the soul" at us...
For the Yet Another Look (or two), go see the following site photos, if you haven't yet (many more CF film shots nearby too):
They're both at http://www.iupui.edu/~rogersc/images/cfpinup.jpg
and

Pleasant viewing, France

Perhaps you could "chuse" to tile the images to see them in stereo??

: Everyone,
: I spent part of the weekend immersed in the second-most pleasurable
: mini-series: Middlemarch (I am sure you can guess what the first
: most pleasurable mini-series is). Either the UK, the BBC, or the
: London theatrical scene is a very small crew -- Middlemarch is
: another indelible link in our chain of personages. Robert Hardy
: (Sir John from S&S, General Tilney from NA), Elizabeth Spriggs
: (Mrs. Jennings from S&S), Jonathan Firth, and screenwriter Andrew
Jonathan Firth, isn't that Colin Firth's brother ?
: Davies. All these and likely more in the series to link.
: This was my second viewing, the first on videotape, and what
: a marvelous series it is! It, like P&P2, grows on repeated viewings,
: a sure sign of lasting strength. I should very much like to talk about
: it here on the BB. I think it has much to associate it with P&P2.
: Perhaps we could schedule a virtual viewing together once the Read and
: View business of P&P2 is all wrapped up? I am sure many of us have already
: seen it, but I think it might prove very amusing to all watch it 'together'.
: Cordially,
: Raphael

Just to clarify: >>Also there was a recent re-upping for everybodys' subscriptions there, which could be misconstrued. <<
I had sucessfully reapplied before my subscription was cancelled.
Also, I don't think that Michael is a bad person. I think he should, as the list manager, have the right to remove people who are being disruptive. I merely challenge his judgement in removing me for a post that was fairly unoffensive. Also, this was not a situation where he warned me and I repeatedly posted to defy him -- he gave me no warning, and in fact never responded or wrote to me in any way. He merely unsubscribed me.

: : : : Another book everyone is talking about is 'The Rules', a how-to-secure-a-man bible. I want to get it and see what all the fuss is about... and of course, see how it applies to Lizzy, Jane, Lydia and Charlotte. That could make for a fun discussion. Anyone out there read this one?????

: : : I've heard of this, but I don't think its reached the antipodes yet. I think the other one that someone mentioned in an aside, 'Men from Mars, Women from Venus', is here, but I can't bring myself to look at it yet. I prefer to consider gender as a continuum from female through to male, and people take their place somewhere along that line, rather than seeing it as entirely opposing forces and worlds. But no doubt I am jumping to conclusions from the book's title and I should actually address this prejudice by reading some of it.

: : : My philosophy is much the same as yours. These books are interesting, but I would not take them too seriously.
: : Unfortunately, many women (including some friends of mine) are flocking to Rules seminars in hopes of finding the path to Mr. Right. The way I understand some of the basics... such as never returning calls, never accepting dates after Wednesday for the weekend.....Charlotte and Lydia, who were into accepting in general, could use a seminar or two.
:
: ___________________
: Yes! they could!
: My God, Rules seminars!!! That's serious and desperate stuff. Just out of curiosity are your friends of an age?
: Hilary
___________________
: Yes, these friends are definitely 'of an age'. (Jane Austen was dead by this age..... Mrs. Bennet was marrying off five daughters at this age..... and Marianne Dashwood was considering Colonel Brandon over-the-hill before he was even close to this age.)
They approach matters of the heart with the same zeal and intellectualism as everything else in their lives....thus the Rules seminars. It remains to be seen whether they get their money's worth.

Not only do *we* know it, but last night as I was watching the first proposal and could not make up my mind to stop and go to bed, I let the tape spin, almost by chance and there it was: the music ceased and the door slammed and out came Darcy soo disappointed...No at the same time my seventeen year-old
boy slammed our door and shouted :Hello mum, have you been "Watching Mr Darcy?" (He could only have heard some phrases from the music and the slam) I turned the tape of blushing and answered: Just for a while...
And he has only seen pieces of five or ten minutes this spring when he came home and joined me as I was at it.
He has a teasing way of pronouncing DAARRCY.

: : : : : : Bernie
: : : : : : PS. His hair has been dyed dark, and the mutton chops are back (although they're not as large as in P&P)! He also gave us one of those SMILES, sigh!
