: This was pointed out by a friend of mine when we were viewing P&P2 the Xth times together. The facial expression that particularly concluded Lizzy's changing heart was after she had learned the good news from Jane's happy babblings about Mr.Bingley's renewal of passion. The close-up of Lizzy turning her head and smile. My friend pointed out that at that moment Lizzy had realized that Darcy did another "nice thing" by encouraging or approval of Bingley's marriage to her sister. So Darcy had thus far justified every his previous "wrong doings" in Lizzy's mind.
_________
That smile spoke volumes - she knew she was next, as Darcy had by then addressed and resolved all her complaints. The man behind the scenes was about to reappear, and she could scarcely wait.

: : I think his front, as I said before, is an involuntary defense mechanism. He doesn't mean to be a jerk, but that's how he comes off when under attack by the situation. He says things to diffuse his own discomfort, but doesn't realize that in doing so he may be exhibiting offensive or childish behavior.
: : Yes, he is misunderstood, becuase people take him to be this awful, haughty, hateful man, which he isn't. He is unenlightened becuase he doesn't understand that other people are affected negatively by what he says and does. And, he is out-of-practice, I guess you could say, becuase he was brought up in an insular world in which he never truly learned how to comfortably relate to strangers. The years since his parents' deaths further contributed to his social inadequacy (serious work, no fun), and, well, I guess that's it!

: : : . She got what she asked for - he listened to her critique of him and cared enough about her (and himself) to change for the better. This is not always a common occurrence in real life, and such a transformation is not easily achieved.

: : : THIS is the kind of response one who confronts dreams of! Further, on this BB, there has been a discussion of confrontations, and frustrations arising from the lack of such. When Lizzy met Wickham again after his marriage, such a confrontation would not have produced any good "fruit" as someone noted. But when Lizzy allowed herself to speak freely to Darcy, in full emotion, much good came of it.
: : : I agree, Janet, such is not commonly the case!

: : I, too, noticed in the 'Confrontation' thread a post concerning why the confrontation with Darcy was fruitful due to his good moral character, but with Wickham it was not because he was basically a hopeless cause. My son's class is performing Beauty and the Beast, and we discussed the comparison between Darcy and Wickham vs. the Beast and Gaston. There are some similarities, on a more simplistic (third grade) level. Now if only my son could see the merit in making his bed!

: I love you guys! You're very right! While he probably wouldn't discuss it, Darcy is - in addition to being incredibly moral - actually very progressive - and certainly NOT a MCP (male-chauvenist-pig). [Classically] Liberal minds make the most efficient learners and the most understanding companions - isn't Mr. Darcy a god? I wonder if he ever read Wollstonecraft...? well, that's pushing it!
: - K
__________
This must have been Austen's push for liberal thinking in her day. Rather ahead of her time, in light of how slowly we're making our way. Darcy would be a stand up man in today's world, listening to and even changing himself for a woman.
The other males in the entire story line are so weak that Darcy's virtues are exemplified by contrast. There is no need for him to be a snob (per another thread); he naturally stands far apart and above them all.
Little wonder that it is Lizzy whom he admires and aspires to please. Her standards also rise above the rest. There was somewhat of a challenge there for him, as her 'good opinion was not easily bestowed and therefore more worth the earning'.

Thanks Zimei for this picture. She does has the most eyes, not to mention her smile. Any details to where or in which scene it is taken (don't think I have the total series on my tape), it does not reflect the usual lighting of the mini-serie. Would appreciate the location of the Ehle fan club as well, having been delighted by her superb performance (and of Mr. Firth's as well, to say the least)

: The other place that a missing person bothers me even more is the scene at the parsonage in which the Colonel and Darcy make their first visit. Immediately prior to this Mr. C. is seen running about like a chicken with it's head cut off looking for his wife and her guests because the gentlemen are hard upon his heels - make haste, make haste! So then we see the visit, and all of those currently in residence at the parsonage are present and accounted for except Charlotte. Even Maria is there, saying absolutely nothing and looking completely overwhelmed, but the hostess, whom Mr. C. had particularly urged to return quickly, is nowhere to be seen.

I've wondered at the missing Charlotte too. Perhaps she is getting the tea, or strangling one of her poultry for dinner.

: : Speaking of accents, when they all get back to Longbourne

: I don't think so. A Welsh accent is much more sing-song, however, I'll admit it is difficult to tell.

But when she says that specific line, there is a
sing-song quality in her voice. That's what made me think
she might be Welsh. The accent doesn't show up in any other
line of hers, only "And that's the first kind word I've had
since Lydia went away." The rest of the time she sounds like
the generic BBC actor.

Yes, but then along comes Lady Catherine to turn everything
upside-down again. Will she convince Darcy to give Lizzy up?
or has he been sufficiently reformed to take Lady C.'s
account of Lizzy's comments only as encouragement. We might
know the answer to that, but at this point Lizzy does not.

Mrs Bennet is standing there like she's drugged or something. Usually she would be dominating the conversation or at least bobbling enthusiastically. Here she's just wooden.
It is unbelievable for Mrs. B to be still and silent.
: Another little anomaly I noticed took place at Rosings just after Darcy returns from Lizzy's refusal. He bounds up the stairs in the main hall, then soon gazes out the window
: from what seems to be a ground floor room. Maybe you've already talked about this but I always thought it was a bit obvious and a bit odd.
This has been mentioned. I was thinking, perhaps, that they could only use the lower floors of Belton House - though why no one in the production noticed this glaring problem I don't know.
