: Could be (seems like he likes to romance his costars). I thought I read that he sort of disappeared after the P&P filming, because they were noting that he didn't give any interviews, but maybe this was true because he went to South America instead of Italy. Anyway seems he hooked up with someone else rather quickly.
: Normally (at least in the U.S.) after completing such a major project the actors would go on a publicity tour, or at least do interviews with major newspapers & magazines.
: Maybe Firth isn't necessarily terribly interested in being a major star or he would've done the publicity.

__________
I,too, read that CF met the Italian woman on the set of Nostromo (she was the personal assistant of the director, I think.) But I also read that he flew back to England at one point to try to rekindle the flame with JE. As far as publicity goes, a lot of the promotional stuff was filmed during the shooting of P&P (according to the Making of...) and if CF had a prior committment to Nostromo, then it makes sense that he would go off and do that. I have read here and there at the FofF site that he is quite publicity-shy. Perhaps this could explain a few things anyway.

So often I would like to speak of something with a friend or relative but there are barriers to that conversation. JA catchs that feeling so well. It is wierd how right this adaptation is though. Maybe Davies was channeling JA.

Amy, I'm glad you survived the Macarena and the Olympic theme! I know what its like because we do an annual Christmas trek to Adelaide where our families are. Its about a 14 hour drive, and every year we wonder if its worth it.
There is a strange thing happening here, which relates to your Christmas in October. Because our Christmas is hot and most people now have switched to having cold Christmas dinners, and because the season is so busy and commercialism so rampant, there is a worrying innovation of having a Christmas celebration (specially for work places) in the middle of the year. The trouble is that I can forsee it becoming a duplicate of the Christmas that everyone is trying to avoid.

: But what does she really have to say to her Aunt?
: She wouldn't really want to go into all the sticky past history between her and Darcy, and all she could say would be "I think he's interested in me, but I'm not certain he'll ask me (again), and I'm not sure either whether I would accept him if he did ask".
: Mrs. Gardiner and she are both so aware of Darcy's interest in her, that any abstract discussion between them on Darcy's merits as a man couldn't be kept from turning into a discussion of Darcy's merits as a possible husband -- for Lizzy.

Bingo! That is exactly right. I've always thought that their reluctance to talk about what concerned them was a realistic portrayal where the two people concerned are not sure they really want to exchange confidences at that level. You are right--the last thing Elizabeth wants to do is to even hint at the possible first proposal.

___________________

I too found these irritating -- there is no reason for Wickham's minature to be there. LOL I always thought that those half-ruined stone walls really indicated that Darcy was not as good a proprietor as "his" people are trying to indicate. While in the book, Mrs. Reynolds does say that Darcy spends half his time in Pemberley--it certainly does not really seem so from what we know in the book for that year -- most of it was in London or with Bingley, nor is that impression really given in P&P2. He was sometimes not as careful about his property as he should be, I guess.

In the book Bingley and Darcy spend a lot of time with the Bennets after returning to Netherfield (rather than the one visit that the video shows). I believe that the Lucas family just assumed that this was leading somewhere - not that they were actually engaged. I believe Lady C heard of the assumption and jumped to a conclusion -- or Mr. Collins passed along the information in that manner.

Belinda and Eliza and Edgeworth and Austen

Posted by Raphael on October 31, 1996 at 19:25:39:

I won't digress too far from the path of the BB, do not fear.
Maria Edgeworth's 'Belinda', first published in 1801, is both an
interesting compliment and a starkly different slant on Jane
Austen's vision of Regency England. All the cliched drama of
novels missing from Austen -- indeed, which she purposefully
avoids inserting, even when they seem to drive the plot -- are,
much of them, present in Belinda. Two duels, a smattering of
melodramatic confessions unveiled on character's knees, and even
a slightly humorous mysterious boudoir, all pervade a novel
which Austen herself read, and which, I believe, liked. She even
refers to it in Northanger Abbey.

It's not -- certainly -- Austen. Nothing is. But it is very
interesting to read it and compare it with, for example, Pride
and Prejudice. Have any of you read it, and if so, what did you
think? Lastly, do any of you wish it were produced a la P&P2?

Cordially,
Raphael

___________________

Its a great look, I agree, but I think instead that he is very anxious about how he is coming across to Lizzie at this point. He is searching her face because he is desperate to know if he is making a good impression, and a lot depends on her answer. Likewise, in another thread recently people said there was a release of tension in this scene, that they were finally relaxing with each other. I don't think that really happens until Lizzie gets in the coach and gives that wonderful backwards look of reassessment, or after. When she says yes to meeting Georgiana, you can see a hint of puzzlement cross her face - 'why do I deserve this from a man I've been so rude to, can he really still love me?'

Another Fan of P&P2

Posted by Tay on October 31, 1996 at 19:46:11:

To Everyone,

For awhile now, I have been gorging myself with these
wonderful messages! I must now speak up and proudly claim
to be a new member!
I am rather new at all this - P&P2 I mean. I had an aunt who
gushed over it when it came out on A&E, but since I don't have
cable, I didn't really know much about it. I had watched P&P0
(Did I get that right?), the one with Laurence Olivier, and was
disappointed with it.
But this P&P2 is absolutely incredible! I love every moment of
it, but especially, especially the part Darcy swims in the pond and
then sees Lizzie. It's so hilarious the way (in many scenes) that
he stares at her so intensely for half an hour, and when he finally
has the courage to go up to her and say something, it almost
always is "And how is your family?" Wasn't it so delightful when
he said that twice during the Pemberley encounter? I just couldn't
help burst out laughing! He's such a dear!
I am just dying to see "Making of P&P". Is there any video coming
out, does anyone know? I'm really excited about joining this gang,
and I have a question to the wonderful founder - Amy:
What is the correct web address for this P&P2 BB? Just in case
I use another computer, I still want to be able to gain access.
Currently, I hop from one link to another. Please write back. I'm
just bubbling with excitement! I just love P&P2, and have seen
it more than five times - excuse me, but I first watched it a few weeks
ago, so I'm still relatively new. I first saw my aunt's copy, and
watched it three times, and then just a few days ago, I got
my own copy. Since I'm in a busy large family, I haven't had much
time to watch it that much, but I'll catch up one day, I promise!
Love (especially to Amy for starting this!!), Tay.
