Amy,
I've just noticed that my post about Charlotte's shrewdness has been added to the Netherfield thread.
Am I going mad or have I posted it in the wrong place ?

: : : I like this format for the links, pictures and fun-with-HTML stuff (your use of bold characters did not go unnoticed, Ann2 -- isn't it fun?) I also like the community here and I liked the whole tone of the board altogether until last night.
: : You sensed right. The invasion did wound me.

Wow, what happened over the weekend? No, don't tell me. I can guess. Amy, I am so sorry this happened. I was just rhapsodizing to someone the other day about how civilized this bb was. I was formerly addicted to a usenet group for writers, but it devolved into a continual flame war, so I stopped going there. What ever we need to do to keep this place the haven of civility, I will gladly do. I agree that the links and pics are wonderful. But the charm of being in a place where one can have a civilized literary conversation or be silly and swoon over Colin Firth without fear of getting singed is what is most important to me.
Let me know if there is anything I can do.
Best,
Mary H

She may have been biding her time until she knew for sure how it would all work out, but she did confide in Jane enough that I don't see how it could have been such a surprise. After all, Charlotte was able to see through the smoke, as did the Gardiners.
I'm not sure how much Charlotte actually saw through the smoke and how much she merely hoped for out of affection for Lizzy and awareness of what a social coup a marriage to Darcy would be. She was astute enough to notice that Mr. Darcy looked at Lizzy a great deal, but I'll bet Caroline Bingley noticed that too. (Only she would have died before she admitted it could mean Darcy was in love with Lizzy.)
The Gardiners saw Darcy on his best and most attentive behavior to Lizzy at Pemberley. (Even Lizzy was surprised by it.) With the added attraction that their neice would be mistress of Pemberley if Darcy was indeed in love with her, it is not surprising that they chose to speculate in that direction. Mrs. Gardiner would not even mention Darcy in her letters until Lizzy brought the subject up by asking why Darcy was at Lydia's wedding. I think C and Mr. and Mrs. G definitely had their suspicions, but I don't think anyone thought the marriage was a sure thing.
