: Last night, I saw a part of Hostages on the History channel. It is a movie
: about those held hostage in Lebanon in the late 80's and starred
: Colin Firth as John McCarthy. It airs again on 10/26, 8pm. 12am, 4am.
: At the end, when he's released, he has a big, beautiful smile on his face.
: Too bad Darcy didn't smile more.

: : Could we talk a bit about poor Colonel Fitzwilliam? (Stop me if you have already gone over this one.) Darcy has found his happiness but I fear that the Colonel is now left to marry Miss de Bourgh ( a fate worse than death, especially when you consider life at Rosings with such a tyrannical mother-in-law). I see the married Colonel constantly drawn to Pemberley to 1.escape the oppressive conditions at home, 2.find male companionship other than Mr. Collins,3. bask in the domestic bliss enjoyed by Darcy and Elizabeth.
: Family duty and the need for money make this marriage inevitable. Am I wrong???
: A few days ago there were some who were trying to marry the poor Colonel off to Caroline Bingley, but this is an equally appalling thought!
: Joan, too

Col. Fitzwilliam is too nice to marry Caroline Bingley, and Anne de Burgh and Georgiana are too close in relationship (plus I believe Lady C would want Anne to marry Col. F's brother, who would become an Earl).

At the Democratic convention the delegates did the dance and Al Gore commented upon it at the beginning of his acceptance speech. He said, "I've been watching you on TV doing the macarena and if you will allow me, I'd like to show you the Al Gore version." And he stood stock still, not blinking or moving a muscle for about 30-60 seconds and then said "Would you like to see it again?" A great self-deprecating moment and commentary to all those who complain that he is stiff and unanimated.

: : : Don't you people have anything better to do than scrutinize every facet of this movie?

: : ___________________
: : Did anyone ever wonder whose hand it is doing the needlework in the opening credits? It's a very nice hand, but somehow it does not appear to be a woman's hand to me. My favorite idea is that it's Colin Firth's hand. He has very nice hands, if indeed that is his hand (and not a double's) helping Lizzy into the carriage at Pemberley. Maybe they looked at the hands of the entire cast, and just picked the one looked best or maybe they picked the hand with some reason in mind...

I agree too. I can't think of any other close ups of Colin
Firth's hands, but they do look good from a distance too - ie. when he impulsively takes Lizzie's hand in the inn and then gives it back, or when he has his hand on the back of a chair at Longbourn the first time he visits there after Lydia's wedding. And then you also know who they are attached to.
I can't check out the embroiderer's hand unfortunatly. I must have scrubbed it, so to speak, in my sloppy taping. The second time I tried to make all the episodes run together, but now I think it was a mistake. Or maybe the hand only appeared on promos here?
Love this (embroiderer's) thread! Do you think its a double?

Good to have you back, Hillary. BTW speaking of embroidery, anybody know what crescenza (sp?) is? I know first hand what playing instruments very ill means. That was an line invented for the film that worked and fit the character and story, don't you think?

I think that's more egalitarian. And I didn't mind the squished credits for the Emma promo, but if they were going to squish them, they should have given us more. rather like Emma herself.

I also wish the Kiss scene could have been drawn out a little, after all we all waited so long for it to happen.
I missed the emma promo! Does it look like it will be as wonderful as P&P?

: Are you at the conference?
Are you kidding, I'm a starving graduate student!
: Anything of interest there to our subculture?
There have been a few postings to AUSTEN-L, and will probably be more
: I must know. Have you confided to the Austen-L ladies
"Ladies"? I think AUSTEN-L has a much more balanced ratio between the sexes than this group....

: Well, you know the old saying about telling a lie; Make it big, repeat it often and people will believe it.
: Wickham's big lie about Darcy is outrageous. There are clues aplenty that it is a lie and if Lizzy were not so angry with Darcy or so taken by Wickham's attentions to her, she would have seen them.
: But Wickham is no fool. He is very careful to sound Lizzy out about her knowledge of Darcy and his reputation in the neighborhood before he begins his tale of woe. He also knows that The Big Lie is more easily believed if there is an element of truth to it. So he tells some of Darcy's good qualities which only makes Lizzy admire his forbearance even more.

I agree. Wickham is really very careful and often says a lot of nice things about Darcy -- he's a good brother, a good landlord, etc. Elizabeth is just using him to feed her disappointment at Darcy's finding her only "tolerable." I know Wickham is supposed to be attractive, but I've always found him to be played smarmy from the beginning in the adaptations on TV. Of course, I knew the story before, but what was the reaction to Wickham of anyone not knowing the plot before they say P&P2?

If you have Making of P&P he looks mush better without sideburns. It also shows him practicing the dance steps. There is also a better picture of him with
Lydia. He looks very sweet with her. I didn't know the story before. I thought he was not handsome, but after seeing him in the book my opinion has changed.
In P&P0 they picked a classic Hollywood
actor. Which you would understand Lizzie attraction.

In the book, I believe most specifically near the end, Austen comments on how Lydia is in many ways a mirror image of her mother at that age -- silly, shallow, hyperactive, etc.
Mrs. Bennett is most fond of Lydia because Lydia is most like Mrs. Bennett.
Cordially,

Rebecca,
I bet you are right. If we didn't know how evil he turned out to be we might have found him more attractive. But I still don't care for the guy's looks, trying hard as I can to be objective.
Who do you suppose might have been better? How about the guy who played Mr Denny? How about the guy who played Will Ladislaw in Middlemarch? Rufus Sewell? Or Colin Firth would have been good too. I'd have bought his line along with Lizzy. But that would leave us Darcyless. As so many of us have said so many times, can't picture anybody but Firth in the Darcy role now. Done deal.

: K- My television would have exploded had Colin Firth been on. Its bad enough its an tv, but was MOLL FLANDERS steamy or what. That Roland guy was adorable. Laura

I've been watching it too, and I was just as shocked as the rest of you. But after I recovered, I found it wonderful. So many unexpected turns. Funny you should mention Roland and Firth. After I had watched it for the second time (I taped it. This could be the start of another obsession.), I thought Colin Firth would have made a wonderful Roland, not that I wasn't perfectly pleased with the Roland they had, but I'm always scouting new roles for Firth.
