I ordered Persuasion and Sense and Sensibility
due in Nov. I should receive persuasion in 4-5 business

Can't wait! I was tempted to get Emma and mansfield

I agree. In that time and period, Jane would have been considered the prettiest because she was fair and blonde whereas Lizzy was darker and went out into the sun a lot which in those times was not really a lady-like thing to do. Currently, we see things quite different and although I admit that I find Lizzy far more attractive than Jane, this is because her personality shines through much more than Jane's.
Although I believe that in 19th century, people would look upon Jane's personality much more favorably as well. (Lizzy was far too outspoken in that time - which makes her perfect in our current society!)

I have seen this as a problem with all three adaptations I
have seen. In all, at least to late 20th Century eyes, the
person cast as Lizzy has always been prettier than the person
cast as Jane. In none of the adaptations do I see that Jane
is five times prettier that Lizzy!

Her illness may also have been a 19th Century version of a
teen rebellion. With a mother like that, so strong and
domineering, the opposite is to be weak and feeble. Seeing
her daughter like that must have driven Lady Catherine nuts!!!
Which may be just what Anne wanted all along.

Look at my bio, I pull from the text an implication that Jane, while quite a beauty, isn't a lithe a we'd imagine. I have a soft spot for Jane, because Lizzie loves her so, and she is so sincere and sweet.

Arnessa's entertaining diversion

Wonderful, entertaining story. Quite a bit included in such a small space.

What my desire is, is to see a televised sequel (with the original cast from P&P2 reprising their roles--everyone) that is acted out in front of a live audience. Like a stage play. And the funny moments would produce hearty laughter from the audience. I wouldn't have thought of this except for a dream I had right before I discovered this discussion site. In the dream it was a prequel actually (taking place while Darcy and Lizzy are engaged) and anytime Darcy or others said something humorous, I heard rollicking laughter in the background. It got me to thinking of how enjoyable the humour of the original story is and how delightful to get audience interaction.

Shortly after that I went to see Emma with a very enthusiastic audience who laughed more than I have heard at most comedies.

To get back more to the point, I had thought too that the conflicts would rise around them, and Lizzy and Darcy would only spar now and then but basically would be the anchors for those adrift around them--like Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner.

Well, I think it could start with "You are all to come to Pemberly at Christmas" (from Lizzie's letter to her Aunt Gardiner) - the year after the weddings - so there would be opportunities for the various family members (for the characters are *all* now actually related in one way or another!) to acquaint one another with what has happened in their lives since most of them had last been together at the wedding... Of course Lydia would be there without Wickham, and the Collinses would bring their new baby, and this could be the occasion upon which Lady Catherine gave up on being left out of everything and condescended to come to Pemberley.

Well, that "5 times prettier" is a biased opinion from a sister who clearly is very fond of her, *and* who has been told all of her life (by her own mother, no less!) that she will never be as pretty as her sister, Jane.

(Someone earlier in this thread spoke of not having found Lizzie especially beautiful at first, until acquaintance with her lively personality caused her entire appearance to become much more attractive. I had intended to agree with whoever said that, but got side-tracked before doing so. )
