Why with all the fuss about Lydia (in particular)is she only shown with Capt. Denny till she runs off with Wickam, but Kitty is shown with at least three main soldiers? You would think Lydia would be shown with a greater variety of companions to indicate her flirtatious manner.

Think how packed with information that scene is. And what a neat touch of genius it was to have Lizzy say the book's opening line. You know, this makes me want to blow off Enchanted April and start on minute dissection of P&P right now. But we should wait, and I ought to re-read the first 12 chapters, too, much as I think I remember it, I know the series has skewed my memory and perception.

Hi Maureen;
Just got online and read your comment about Colin Firth. My cousin Patty and I watched her copy last night and midnight. We both think he is incredibly sexy and you're right- he does play an excellent Darcy. We are crazy admirers of P&P just like all of you. So if you have free time, send me a note and we'll talk more about P&P.

Yes, yes....This bothers me as well. Almost as much as
the problem with where the Pemberly music room is
relative to the lake (but the reason for this problem is the
use of different locations for the interior and exterior shots).

Agree that P&P2 is far superior to P&P1, but at the time
(late 70's or early 80's -- I know I saw it on Masterpiece
Theatre before 1983) it was the best going. I do like the
actress who played Lizzie, and one or two others.

FYI -- the actress who played Charlotte in P&P1 also played
Elinor in a BBC adaptation of Sense and Sensibility (looks
to be about the same production period as P&P1, esp
since the actress seems to be about the same age).

: I saw it first after I read the book and was very disagreeably surprised. They left out Darcy's "She is not hansome enough to tempt me!" and substituted a silly remark about "middle classes at play" in its place, changing all the emphasis and the fun! And they made Mr Collins a librarian!.

I am confused -- do you mean P&P0 with Olivier and Greer
Garson? I have owned the tapes of P&P1 (BBC earlier
version) since about 1984, and have watched them many
times. I reviewed them this am, and the line about Elizabeth
not being handsome enough is in, as well as Mr. Collins
profession being a clergyman.

Regardless, P&P2 is far superior to all previous versions.

: I saw the Oliver version on TNT her in Sweden a week ago or so.
: It is very unlike the book. It is sometimes funny but the discrepances
: from the original are to many and unnecessary.Even if one must
: exuce some of them because of the time it was made in 1940.
: What annoys me most is the fact that darcys admiration for Lizzy is evident
: the whole time he does not try to hide it . So one get no sense
: that he is struggling with himself. And ofcause the time period is wrong
: around 1840 insted of 1813.And they speak about the battle of Waterloo
: wich took place in 1815

I also wondered about them dancing the waltz - since it
wasn't done in P&P2, I wondered if the waltz became a "proper"
dance later than 1813? I know it was considered improper
that the couple touched (other than holding hands).

Back to P&P2, another thing I wonder about is the gauzy
headcovering that married women wear at home - what was the
purpose?

Enchanted April

I watched "Enchanted April" last night for the third time, but I really can't think of a thing to say about it. Each time I see I like it; however, it is not one of my top ten favorites. "EA" seems to be simply a feel-good movie. There just is not a lot of depth to it or am I missing something?

: Mac users may be interested in a too-little-known feature which is built into in all models of Macintoshes - you do not even need to have an application with which to do this. Whatever you are looking at on the screen can be captured into a PICT file by using the COMMAND-SHIFT-3 keystroke combination. In older Macs these are saved onto the root (main) level of your hard drive with the name "Screen 0" "Screen 1", "Screen 2", etc, and in newer models, the name will be "Picture 1", "Picture 2" etc. [Of course, it is a good idea to re-name these files so that you can tell what they are, and to prevent the eventual creation of "Picture 573", "Picture 2001" or somesuch. ;-) ]
: Joan, too

This is the first time I've ever found this site. I am amazed and delighted. This is the most amazing thing. I cannot tell you how much we watch this movie at our house. Our tapes are already breaking from overuse. I would love to get a screen saver as a surprise for my mother but we have an IBM. Any suggestions?

Interesting but one has to remember that everything before middle ages
has to be taken with a grain of salt.(and some other things to)
But the fact is that a great deal of todays humanity
have descent from for example Carlemage,Gorm the old (a danish king)
or the early English kings in different ways

i definitely know what you mean...it is feel-good in that everyone is paired up in the end, marriages are 'renewed', embittered old ladies find their soft spots... at several points i sensed some underlying conflicts, eg related to the social second-class position of married women at that time (and that was why Polly Walker's independent-spirited character was so refreshing--yet she was discontented and the 'solution' seemed to be her finding a man...) and how their husbands tend to undervalue them. i had a problem with Hamlisch (sp?) beginning to cherish his wife partly due to realizing her 'usefulness' to him in his business connections. anyways, there were underlying themes of gender inequity that did not seem to be developed or resolved so that part of me felt warm-fuzzy about the fairy-tale-like ending while at the same time 'hanging' too... any thoughts about this anyone?

Hi there! Just stumbled across this wonderful discussion group.
Watching P&P for the second time, twice a week since it's on
Dutch and Belgian tv running simultaneously. There IS some danger
of a Mr Darcy o.d. of course ...

Would anyone know the true locations of the mansions, manor or whatever that were
used for Pemberley, Rosings Park , Netherfield etc?

Somebody had to run off with Wickham or there would be no story.
Lydia was a spoiled child by her mother and ignored by her father.
So if she was or wasn't who cares.

The Sundance channel is a new channel by Robert Redford and like CNN and A&E plays at the same time both East and West coast. So just add 3 hours on East coast. EST the movie would start Oct. 1, 12:30pm 11:30pm Oct. 2, 9:30 am
