Re: Video cover of Persuasion

: : : After 8+ viewings of A&E's P&P, 6 of 95's "Persuasion," and 3 (going on 4) of "Sense & Sensibility," I have reached several conclusions. (1) I am addicted; (2) I am not ready to ask for help; (3) "but, I like 5 hour movies, and, anyway, it's not a movie, it's REAL!"(4)There are so many parallel themes and commonalities in these stories that one simply must conclude that Jane had an unresolved first encounter love and set about to reach acceptable closure time and again through fantasy, since her real encounter ended prematurely to her sorrow; (5) I love Jane's mind, wit and wish she were here today.
: : : (6) I am torn. Mr. Darcy had my heart, but alas, I've become most fond of the military. The intensity of Capt. Wentworth has won me over; though, perhaps, Col. Brandon's sensitivity intrudes upon my once-impenetrable shell. Is there help for me?
: : :I'm sure that there is help out there for us poor Austen addicts, but who would want it? I know I don't, although my roommates are willing to chip in the money for therapy.
: : I don't think I would choose Mr. Darcy over Captain Wentworth, but then, I admit that I am a little biased (I've only seen Persuasion once, but I've seen Pride and Prejudice...well, a lot.)
: : I think I'm going to rerent Persuasion over the weekend because I don't remember it very well.
: : Annie
I think I could have written your comments, Annie, except that I haven't seen any of the productions as many times as you. I find Darcy very, very romantic, but I think Captain Wentworth might be more of a serious choice on my part: Darcy the infatuation, Wentworth the love.
: I wonder why they put a Harlequin Romance cover on the video.
: There is a Fabio like picture on the front--with two people
: who are not even in the movie. On the back there is a similar
: picture with Wentworth and Anne. I did a double take and then
: burst out laughing when I saw it.

contractions in speech

: Amy

Actually, having been weaned on P&P1, one of my first hesitations about P&P2 was the abundance of contractions. Lizzie, in particular, often says "can't, don't, etc." It's really a minor point, but I rather liked the formality of full words. It gives a different sense of the manners and conventions of the time. Is anyone familiar enough with private writing (eg., diaries) to know if contractions were commonly used? On the same general subject, (but let me hasten to insert that I liked Jennifer Ehle very, very much in the role), I was a little put off by the faces she makes, blowing out her cheeks, chewing on her lower lip, etc. The director should have caught her after the first scene.

Don't worry about the spelling of my name. Usually, people call me, "Mr.". Even if I type it out correctly, mail will invariable come to Tammy or Mr. Tommy....
Re: Charleston: It's worth an overnighter from Greenville to survey the land in Charleston. I'm sure you've never seen a city quite like it. (Old Town Alexandria, VA and Georgetown (DC) are close, but still VERY different. The Plantations outside of Charleston would be reminiscent, I am sure, of the English estates, especially since many of them were copies of English estates. Today is a perfect Charleston day. 70 degrees, slight breeze, leaves still on the trees...not as cool as the day Lizzy and Darcy had their fateful conversation, to be sure.

Hey! I forgot to respond to Cheryl's inquiry about Ann of Green Gables. Yes, Yes, Yes, of course, I've seen it! At least four of five times! Is it a SIGN? Details, I love details. I saw "Emma" again with my 13 year old daughter yesterday and enjoyed it twice as much as the first time. There was so much I missed the first go-round. Now, I need to see it again to see what else I missed! It seems to me that people in this little group like to see things over and over again, too. Everyone seems so analytical, but with different eyes to see different details. I was amazed at all that talk about camera angles, etc. I'm getting quite an education! I think this is all about vicarious experiences, or should I not have said this? I downloaded a pic of Mr. Darcy and my husband saw it and xeroxed a copy of his own picture and taped it over Mr. Darcy! He was actually jealous.. I told him that I only preferred Mr. Darcy when I was Lizzy...(Hmmmmm.)

: My latest confession: all of my family left today for a three week vacation (I'm at home for job reasons) and for days now I have thought "No, do not put the video tape in, they will be gone soon and then I can watch it as often as I choose without any guilt." I took them to the airport this afternoon. When I arrived home, I immediately fixed a pot of coffee, broke out the chocolate chip cookies and watched the first two tapes. I did not hold the remote control in my hand so that I could stop it at the first sound of a footfall entering the room, for there was no one to interupt me. Ah, bliss. And just think of all the guilt free viewings I can enjoy in three weeks! I wish you could all join me!

: BBC/A&E Pride and Prejudice (no cable).
: James Berg
: University of Minnesota

Haven't we caught ourselves a qualified one, now? Great. Thanks so much for stopping by.

I will try to limit myself to just a few questions for now.

1. How cool you chose the adaptations for a dissertation topic. Any chance of publishing it? I'll buy one. Will you ever get to teach Forster adaptations? You are in an English department?

2. Is ARWAV -- or is it on its way to becoming -- a classic movie? I think it has the properties, but what is the general feeling among people who know?

3. Help me with Forster's attitude about society and about his time. It seems this was an awkward period for many in England -- just emerging from Victorian mores and many people fascinated with the odd, eccentric, intellectual -- even occult. Where did Forster stand personally? Was he odd? Was he with a crowd? I am too ignorant of the those times (though I could tell you exactly where Napolean was when Austen characters refer to him). Was he a contemporary of Maugham? Wilde? Shaw? Woolfe? Please forgive me if I am way off. As I think I said in my plea to the ModBrit list, we are adrift here.

Signs of Addiction

Posted by Cheryl on September 23, 1996 at 14:06:14:

Hello, my name is Cheryl and I am a P&P2 addict (Hi Cheryl!)
Amy suggested starting a list of "Signs of Addiction to P&P2" and I shall get the ball rolling by listing some already mentioned, adding some of my own and inviting you to add to the list.

1. You view alone, and in secret, taking special care to hide knowledge of this from your family.
2. You have become a P&P2 "Pusher" foisting video taped copies onto unsuspecting friends.
3. You tend not to use contractions in speech and writing.
4. Friends comment upon your improved posture.
5. As you watch the video, you recite dialogue along with characters.
6. You now know how to dance the Sarabande to Mr. Beveridge's Maggot with no prior lessons.
7. You begin to smile in anticipation before Mr. Bennett even begins to speak.
8. You know what lies around every corner at Pemberly.
9. You know the VCR counter numbers and can accurately fast forward to your favorite scenes.

Any other contributions?

Cheryl

PS. Think of all our poor sisters out there who do not have access to this support group. How they must suffer believing themselves to be alone in their addiction! If only there were a way to reach them!

Which version of S&S were you talking about?
A friend of mine bought BBC's 1986(?) version at about $24;
the 1995 Emma Thompson's version is about the same price or less by now.

: Yes. That's how this works. Each time your browser has the patience to load the little red graphic at the bottom of the main page that says "WA," linking to a script at wishing.com, it's a hit. But at least it is not the type that counts every seperate graphic on the page as a hit.

I am beginning to suspect that that counter is more intelligent than all of us! Yesterday I happened to notice that even when just going "back" to the main page (*wihout* re-loading, which means that the cache file is being used) as the end of the page was re-drawn, the modem light went on - which I assume must mean that "Big Brother" is reporting to the counter?

So I started watching the modem ight and the disk drive light together (easy to do, since the modem light is very close to the DD light), and indeed, when going "back" the page is loading from the drive, but *also* - though not every time - the modem light goes on as well just for a half second or so right at the end of the load. The modem light *never* goes on when any individual postings are returned to, and oddly enough, it does not go on *every* time that the main page is returned to - maybe every 3rd-to-5th time? This example of artificial intelligence is an amazingly sophisticated lurker!
