: : It is too bad we do not have some of the original confessions available in archives...so many expressions just like yours, Tommye and Cheryl!!! Arnessa had one that was quite an accurate description for so many of us - compelling and true in its confession. Someone (may have been Arnessa, i can't remember) talked of carrying extra copies with her pushing it off on anyone she could!! (thus also lableing her a PUSHER!!!)
: I can't tell you how badly I feel about trashing that particular post. When this board first went up, I neglected to keep the first 80 or so messages, telling myself they were mostly tests. But Arnessa's great addiction post was among them.
: Arnessa, if you are over there behind that screen I covered last spring, pray appear and tell if there's a chance you might have kept a copy of that post.
: Absent that, what do you say we begin a list of "Signs of Addiction," starting with some of the behaviors mentioned in this thread: pushing, hiding it from family. I would add a tendency not to use contractions in speech and writing and improved posture.
: Amy

Oh PLEASE do. I would love to compare symptoms. I am also a pusher and a hider. My latest sign of addiction is realizing that I know the counter number on the VCR for the videotapes that will get me to my favorite scenes if I need to fast forward.

I thought I was alone with my obsessive regard for P&P2. After discovering your site I have been lurking happily for a few weeks. It has been *wonderful* reading all of your wise and witty comments and observations. I now no longer worry about my addiction-I'm back to just enjoying it-but I do have a new concern. I feel I'm demonstrating signs of schizophrenia.
Now in addition to thinking about P&P more often than anyone is my acquaintance I hear the voices of people I have never MET in my head while I am re-reading scenes in or watching P&P!! Thank you joantoo, amy, arnessa, raphael, cheryl and all the rest for your posts. Although I may look crazy laughing out loud at my computer monitor, exclaiming aloud while watching a scene
or having a one sided conversation with a thread I'm very happy.

: Thanks for the encouraging words. The problem is now compounded, for I find myself concealing Austin-L from my husband. Twice he has (walked in on me and) asked, "what are you doing?" "Who are you talking to?" Guiltily I respond, "No One!." Defensively, I add, "Doing just what you do. Why? Is that a problem?" Further, I add, "May I have some privacy, please!" Offended, he leaves the room. I am once again able to resume...
: Perhaps when the addiction bleeds over into REALITY, family life, it has gotten A LIFE OF ITS OWN!
: It's been almost 24 hours now since I last pertook. I'm feeling queezy. I must go lie upon my bed, weakly grab the remote and push, PLAY...... (Yes, PLAY ON! P&P2!)
: (I know, it's sick.) Tommye (P.S. My daughter and I are going back to see Emma again this p.m.)

My latest confession: all of my family left today for a three week vacation (I'm at home for job reasons) and for days now I have thought "No, do not put the video tape in, they will be gone soon and then I can watch it as often as I choose without any guilt." I took them to the airport this afternoon. When I arrived home, I immediately fixed a pot of coffee, broke out the chocolate chip cookies and watched the first two tapes. I did not hold the remote control in my hand so that I could stop it at the first sound of a footfall entering the room, for there was no one to interupt me. Ah, bliss. And just think of all the guilt free viewings I can enjoy in three weeks! I wish you could all join me!

Video cover of Persuasion

: : After 8+ viewings of A&E's P&P, 6 of 95's "Persuasion," and 3 (going on 4) of "Sense & Sensibility," I have reached several conclusions. (1) I am addicted; (2) I am not ready to ask for help; (3) "but, I like 5 hour movies, and, anyway, it's not a movie, it's REAL!"(4)There are so many parallel themes and commonalities in these stories that one simply must conclude that Jane had an unresolved first encounter love and set about to reach acceptable closure time and again through fantasy, since her real encounter ended prematurely to her sorrow; (5) I love Jane's mind, wit and wish she were here today.
: : (6) I am torn. Mr. Darcy had my heart, but alas, I've become most fond of the military. The intensity of Capt. Wentworth has won me over; though, perhaps, Col. Brandon's sensitivity intrudes upon my once-impenetrable shell. Is there help for me?
: :I'm sure that there is help out there for us poor Austen addicts, but who would want it? I know I don't, although my roommates are willing to chip in the money for therapy.
: I don't think I would choose Mr. Darcy over Captain Wentworth, but then, I admit that I am a little biased (I've only seen Persuasion once, but I've seen Pride and Prejudice...well, a lot.)
: I think I'm going to rerent Persuasion over the weekend because I don't remember it very well.
: Annie

I wonder why they put a Harlequin Romance cover on the video.
There is a Fabio like picture on the front--with two people
who are not even in the movie. On the back there is a similar
picture with Wentworth and Anne. I did a double take and then
burst out laughing when I saw it.

I admit, too, that (even last night) I watched the last 1 and 1/3 hours again, after having also watched it the day before. Yes, I conceal the fact from family members.!

Oh! The delicious shame of it all!!!

I have read Anne of Green Gables. The mini-series from 1985 and its 1987 sequel "Anne of Avonlea" reigned as my favorite shows until P&P2 came along. I also spent some time leading music at my church before my second child was born. I love music.

I saw the picture you are referring to in a video catalog. Not having seen the movie yet nor reading the book I expected this to represent the main characters. When my friend rented Persuasion I watched it and kept waiting for the main character to come out. When I realised Anne was the plain one, I kept waiting for her to put a touch of makeup on during one of her looks in the mirror. This really had confused me. If there had been an accurate promo picture for the movie I would have known what to expect and not minded, but it just threw me off balance.

Thankfully I have since read the book and watched the movie again and have begun to see a pure loveliness in "plain" Anne's looks. Or moreso her beauty of character increases her loveliness on the outside.

I wondered who decided on that "Harlequin" cover. I think it is a mistake. For if it is for marketing sake anyone who gets the video will be confused/dissappointed if they hadn't known what to expect.

Stones thrown at us -- or me? -- from Firthlist?

I learned only today that the Firthlisters have been trashing us, or me or this board or something. I don't read the digests everyday and missed the damning posts. Anna-Karin or Laura, pray write and tell the nature of this slander for I am quite astonished to hear of it.

Are we too uneducated in Firthlore? Too prissy? I don't understand. I have always enjoyed reading the posts there and have delighted in the difference from this place in style, tone, character. Hurts my feelings a little. Please tell so I won't imagine worse.

: Sheesh. As Emma might say, This democracy nonsense can be so tiresome!
: So what's the thrust? Are you two just pointing out that P&P1 can be had if one wants to have it? Or are you voting for it/advocating it be kept as a nomination? Want to keep it in, and if it gets picked, help the others with suggestions about where to find it?
: Amy

check www.fusionvideo.com I just ordered it over the phone for about 30.00 (add for shipping).
Not a great price but it is in stock. Their 800 number is on their web page. They have a
catalog of British films/series.... It will make any Anglo-videophile drool.
