Actually, that was my remark. I'm knew at this and probably put my comment in the wrong place! Yes, I vote for "A Month in the Country."

Hey, Susan! I live in South Carolina, too! Where do you want to move back North???
There may actually be more opportunity to experience "things English" here in the South. Take Charleston, for instance. Lots of early English influence here. "Emma" is playing at the Roxy on East Bay St. (The only theatre int he whole area to show it for a month!)

We moved here from Northern VA two years ago. But I have deep Southern roots and I had to return. Regards.

: So what's the thrust? Are you two just pointing out that P&P1 can be had if one wants to have it? Or are you voting for it/advocating it be kept as a nomination? Want to keep it in, and if it gets picked, help the others with suggestions about where to find it?
: Amy

Frankly, Amy, I don't remember P&P1 being one of the choices proferred. Since I'm not quite ready to let go of my addiction, I wouldn't mind sticking with P&P. So, Can I change my vote to P&P1? Tommye

: : : I get my daily fix of Jane Austen by being an avid lurker of

: : : a thing possible?) Pray, tell me, is there an archives for
: : : this BB? I do not wish bring up topics that have been thoroughly
: : : hashed out before I found all you kindred spirits.
: : : Cheryl
: : Thank you, Cheryl, for your note! For a while, I was thinking I was the ONLY ONE! Everyone was intellectualizing so; they didn't seem to be connecting. I admit, too, that (even last night) I watched the last 1 and 1/3 hours again, after having also watched it the day before. Yes, I conceal the fact from family members.!
: It is too bad we do not have some of the original confessions available in archives...so many expressions just like yours, Tommye and Cheryl!!! Arnessa had one that was quite an accurate description for so many of us - compelling and true in its confession. Someone (may have been Arnessa, i can't remember) talked of carrying extra copies with her pushing it off on anyone she could!! (thus also lableing her a PUSHER!!!) I know we have all watched in private, hoping not to be caught and confronted with the "AGAIN" statement!!! Never fear, as much intellectualizing as you may sense here, all are emotional addicts in the sickest sense! (I hope I do not offend any fellow addicts......

Thanks for the encouraging words. The problem is now compounded, for I find myself concealing Austin-L from my husband. Twice he has (walked in on me and) asked, "what are you doing?" "Who are you talking to?" Guiltily I respond, "No One!." Defensively, I add, "Doing just what you do. Why? Is that a problem?" Further, I add, "May I have some privacy, please!" Offended, he leaves the room. I am once again able to resume...
Perhaps when the addiction bleeds over into REALITY, family life, it has gotten A LIFE OF ITS OWN!
It's been almost 24 hours now since I last pertook. I'm feeling queezy. I must go lie upon my bed, weakly grab the remote and push, PLAY...... (Yes, PLAY ON! P&P2!)
(I know, it's sick.) Tommye (P.S. My daughter and I are going back to see Emma again this p.m.)

: Here are the bio questions developed by Ramona that some of us answered 10 days ago or so. If any of the new people here would like to tell about themselves, please do. If not, okay too. I'll try to get the answers from the others in shape sometime over the weekend.
: Amy
: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
: 1) Name-Marie
: 2) Occupation-work in university library
: 3) When you first saw P&P2-January 1996
: 4) How did you find out about it? various--magazine articles; colleagues (also Austen fans)
: 5) What interested you in seeing it? I've loved and read Jane Austen for years, had seen the various BBC versions of other Austen novels (P&P, S&S (very good, by the way), and Mansfield Park, and was eager for more.
: 6) Have you read the original novel? Yes, many, many times.
: 7) If so, before or after seeing the movie? both
: 8) Favorite character(s) (other than Lizzy or Darcy-as liking them goes without saying.)Jane. I did not care for her at first, thinking that she was not attractive enough to be the most handsome young woman in Hertfordshire (and I still think the tight pull of her hair in back gives her a very bad line from back of head to nape of neck), but she grew on me. She is very warm, and I like the close relationship between her and Lizzie.
: 9) Favorite scene/sequence Originally the gazing scene at Pemberly, but now it's a tie between the pavane at Netherfield and the distraught scene at the inn at Lampton (sp?).
: 10) Most awkward scene to watch (or not watch because you feel so embarrassed for the characters involved)- Any scene with Mrs. Bennet. Not only is she embarrassing, she's also incredibly irritating. I think she was over-played.
: 11) Other Austen films viewed- P&P0 (Olivier version--terrible), P&P1, S&S1, S&S2, Emma1 (the BBC version made in the early seventies--I did not care for it), Emma2 (not perfectly faithful to the book, but I enjoyed it immensely), Northanger Abbey, Persuasion. Need I convince you that I'm a true Jane Austen fan?
: 12) Anything else you would like to share (interests, marital status etc...)- Married (my husband also likes Jane Austen, fortunately); have a sister out of town who was the one who introduced me to Jane Austen years ago, and who now has a daughter who, at fourteen is a devoted fan herself--long, long phone conversations re. any Jane Austen production.

I can't tell you how badly I feel about trashing that particular post. When this board first went up, I neglected to keep the first 80 or so messages, telling myself they were mostly tests. But Arnessa's great addiction post was among them.

Arnessa, if you are over there behind that screen I covered last spring, pray appear and tell if there's a chance you might have kept a copy of that post.

Absent that, what do you say we begin a list of "Signs of Addiction," starting with some of the behaviors mentioned in this thread: pushing, hiding it from family. I would add a tendency not to use contractions in speech and writing and improved posture.

I forgot to add in the "additional interests" line that the P&PBB is rapidly becoming an addiction of its own. At some point I may just have to go cold turkey and quit.

Or is anyone else a browser cache pack rat?

I asked:
>>>>: Arnessa, if you are over there behind that screen I covered last spring, pray appear and tell if there's a chance you might have kept a copy of that post.

Then had another idea:

There may be people out there who never dump their browser caches, which means it's possible that addiction post of Arnessa's is on somebody's hard drive. If you care to check, the file name would be something like 32.html -- probably anywhere from 15.html to 90.html and I think the title of the post (and therefore HTML title) was something like "Confessions of a P&P Addict."

Gosh I feel bad about this.

So there is no Netherfield set at all? The Act II "Hunsford and Rosings" must mean sparate sets for the parsonage and Rosings? That is still a *lot* of scenes - and scene changes!

Longbourn
Assembly
Longbourn 2
Assembly 2
Parsonage (possibly more changes here?)
Rosings (possibly more changes here?)
Pemberly
Longbourn 3

This would be a real challenge for a set designer, especially if they were trying to do it in the appropriate period.

Well, there's a business opportunity for you Joan. Buy rights to the series, mask out everything but the backgrounds, set up a rear projection system for a small theatre and sell the whole package.

: Ann:
: In the Milne version Elizabeth mentions to Darcy at one of the balls that she will be in Derbyshire in the summer, and he says he hopes that, if she has time, she might stop and see Pemberley. So, in this version he does actually ask her to come, but it is not in the book.

Milne appears to have made Darcy a far more sympathetic - and less proud - character. (Austen's Darcy would never have invited her to come that early in the plot.) It appears that most of the "pride and prejudice" must be on Lizzie's side in this version. This would significantly reduce the level of dramatic tension between L & D, IMO.

Ha ha ha! If I had the $ to do step 1 of the above, I'd buy up all of the prints of the complete video and distribute them free to addicts - as they do in programs for other addicts (as in free marijuana for those needing it medically). ;-)

Yep. Except when he supposes that she is tolerable, he is quite
charming to her. That certainly results in much less tension.
In Milne's version by the time of their second meeting, at
the second assembly ball, he is already openly courting her.

Tammye,
I want to move back North (Michigan) for many reasons. One is because that is where my extended family is at & it gets lonely without them. Second, I am used to living in a relatively big city area and where I am at now (Greenville) is too rural. The are't enough art museums or book stores to keep me happy. The closest decent city is Atlanta which is a two and a half hour drive.
I haven't been to Charleston yet but I hear that it is a great city. Too bad we don't live closer. We could have started a Jane Austen club.

Oh PLEASE do. I would love to compare symptoms. I am also a pusher and a hider. My latest sign of addiction is realizing that I know the counter number on the VCR for the videotapes that will get me to my favorite scenes if I need to fast forward.

I thought I was alone with my obsessive regard for P&P2. After discovering your site I have been lurking happily for a few weeks. It has been *wonderful* reading all of your wise and witty comments and observations. I now no longer worry about my addiction-I'm back to just enjoying it-but I do have a new concern. I feel I'm demonstrating signs of schizophrenia.
Now in addition to thinking about P&P more often than anyone is my acquaintance I hear the voices of people I have never MET in my head while I am re-reading scenes in or watching P&P!! Thank you joantoo, amy, arnessa, raphael, cheryl and all the rest for your posts. Although I may look crazy laughing out loud at my computer monitor, exclaiming aloud while watching a scene
or having a one sided conversation with a thread I'm very happy.
