So delighted to find such a newsgroup !! I stumbled upon this group while searching more info. on J. Austen's other movies/tv series/videos, etc.
I just _discovered_ the world of J. Austen by accidently watching the recent A&E Pride and Prejudice. The very next day of the final episode, I dashed to the theatre to see Emma. Next step is naturally to read the novels by J. A. So far I have read Emma, P&P, Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility. Mansfield Park is to come the next.
After I read the P&P, however, I wonder why the BBC/A&E P&P did not include the scenes after Mr. Darcy's proposal to Miss Elizabeth Bennet, excepting the wedding. Quite a few scenes are not so trivial, IMHO, although it is heartbreaking to see Lydia & Wickam taking advantage of the Darcys ... But living happily in Pemberly together with Georgiana should have been included. It would definitely satisfy me if they included the scenes such as snobbing Miss Bingley turning her leaf toward Mrs. Darcy, Lizzy _archly_ asking tons of questions to Mr. Darcy (after the proposal), Georgiana becoming good friends with Lizzy, etc. (Well, this subject might have already been discussed here, but I must dwell.)
The screenplay of the movie Emma was so way off the novel Emma, I didn't like the movie as much as before I read the novel. ( I admit I do love the _air_ of the film... ) By comparison, I thought A&E adaptation of P&P was much much better, and I cannot wait to see the A&E miniseries Emma. I hope they do the justice to the novel itself.
BTW, is Collin Firth the actor Collin Firth who played Rupert Everett's best friend in Another Country?

Somebody told us about this a couple weeks ago, but here it is again:
P&P will be shown again on A&E Classroom beginning Nov 6 at 7a.m. Eastern in 1-hour installments on consecutive Wednesdays. Like the last time it was shown on classroom, it will include the "missing scenes." Read about what those are from the links page here.
A&E Classroom link below.

I would have loved more dialog between Lizzie and Darcy after the proposal. JA has some wonderful lines between a playful Lizzie and a happy Darcy. Why didn't Colin Firth smile as JA describes in the book after Lizzie agrees to marry him? It's my only criticism of his portrayal of Darcy.

Marie,
Hi. What kind of smile would Firth have made it, do you suppose? With teeth? Me, I didn't like him smiling with teeth at the end though everybody else here seemed to. It was okay in Valmont and Circle of Friends, but for Darcy, I liked the cute closed mouth curl smile as at Rosings when he says, "You have employed your time much better."

I agree about the smile - I found Collin's reaction disappointing, too.

Okay, so maybe i haven't actually seen any of the other movies or
miniseries that were nominated (in the writing and best miniseries
categories).
But does anyone really think that P&P wasn't as good as, say,
Gulliver's Travels???? (let's see: Lizzie and Darcy.....or Ted
Danson and Mary Steenburgen.)
Maybe i'm asking the wrong crowd ;)

What's Darcy's first name, anyway?
I'm terribly embarrassed to have to ask this, but it's been on the tip of my tongue for days, and i can't go check the book because (GASP) I don't own a copy!
Please don't be too hard on me.

I agree! I read somewhere, though, that the screenwriter had explained the omission by saying that in film, once the romantic interests have finally got together it's best to end as quickly as possible. In most cases this is true - especially when writing one from scratch, but I would have preferred to have had an exception made in this case.
: BTW, is Collin Firth the actor Collin Firth who played Rupert Everett's best friend in Another Country?
The very one.

: Are those so-called "edited-out" segments not aired on A&E anything to do with the scenes after Mr. Darcy's proposal to Miss Lizzy?
No, unfortuantely those were never included, even in the full version.

Actually it's a bit confusing - it's Fitzwilliam - same as the last name of his cousin Col.Fitzwilliam.

: 1) Name-Donna Clarke
: 2) Occupation- Domestic engineer
: 3) When you first saw P&P2- Jan.15th
: 4) How did you find out about it? Promos I didn't tape the first partbut taped 2and 3
but I did tape it the next time it was shown.
: 5) What interested you in seeing it? I like PBS Upstairs Downstairs, Masterpiece Theater, All
Creatures Great and Small . It just better TV. I like history too.
: 6) Have you read the original novel? Yes
: 7) If so, before or after seeing the movie? After the movie I've read everything but Northhanger Abbey and Mansfield Park
When I went to buy them they were gone.
: 8) Favorite character(s) (other than Lizzy or Darcy-as liking them goes without saying.) Charlotte because when Lizzie got out of telling her age and expressing her opinions she was the only

in front of Mr. Darcy when Lizzie and Jane entered the Nfield ball. He was cute and tall. Great cast.
: 9) Favorite scene/sequence Nfield ball when Mr. Darcy is pacing {whenever he paces} watching Lizzie dance.
{whenever he smiles without the teeth}
: 10) Most awkward scene to watch (or not watch because you feel so embarrassed for the characters involved)- When Lydia tells Jane to walk lower I cut it out of the tape, when Mrs. B. said they have 5,000 a year fast forward that part.
Nfield supper.
: 11) Other Austen films viewed- Old P&P with Sir Laurence and Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, and Emma.

I saw his heartfelt delight! Firth looked like he was just about to burst with joy. I don't think they got Lizzy's speech accepting the proposal quite right, though. I don't think she would have just said, "My feelings are so different... In fact, they are quite the opposite." But then Austen never tells us what they say the critical moment. Darn. Anybody out there have a good idea as to what she might have said after Darcy's implores: "If your feelings are what they were last April, tell me so at once, etc?"

Or say a prayer. I felt his delight too. Delight in a Darcy kinda way.

Um. No. I don't think I could have said a word. I'd probably just sigh.

I do ID with Lizzie in this scene though, as I do again and again. In critical times in my life I have not been able to look a person in the eye.

Yes! I especially loved her little dabs at her nostrils when Lady Catherine gets back into the carriage after the confrontation with Lizzy. The poor girl never really had a chance with a mother like that.
