Joan,
Thanks for trying to figure it out. Maybe we ought to just do it on request if someone is curious about a particular thread.

Oh, I don't know. I was convinced. Remember, Charlotte suspected Darcy's admiration of Elizabeth when they were visiting Rosings and the parsonage. And seemed commplace to assume that if a sibling married, the other siblings would be thrown into the company of the new spouse's friends and family. Caroline Bingley thought of that with regard to Georgiana and Bingley; Mrs. Bennet thought of it regarding Jane and Bingley and the effect her other daughters; and Elizabeth herself thought of it. So it was only to be expeced that the Lucases would follow the same line of thought, and pass it on to the Collinses.

Good point. She also saw the looks Darcy was giving Lizzie as early as the party at Lucus lodge. "Mr Darcy looks at you a great deal, Lizze."
Maybe she called it all along.

I read "the beverly hillbillies meet masterpiece theatre." Something about Flora (the main character) thinking herself like Jane Austen in that they both didn't like a mess. She also wanted to write something like "Persuasion".

Our steamed hostess, Amy, admonished the author:
: Steve remembered that this will not affect the rings of Satrun:
Excuse me, but for the record I 'remembered' no such thing. And I drive a Mazad, not a Satrun, and it has never needed a ring job.
: : From *this* evaluator's perspective, the I,T,and J are consistent. I had him as S vs N, but...
: : HEY, HE'S A FICTIONAL CHARACTER IN A NOVEL WHO WOULD BE 'DEAD' NOW FOR AT LEAST 150 YEARS!
:
: No. Of course it is all nonsense which is part of the reason why we Ns like it. But, if I recall correctly, Steve, you are the one who thought up this M-B thing without even knowing it had been a topic on Austen-L. And you were the one who suggested it because you thought it would help us understand our fascination for Darcy and Lizzie.
Your Honoress, I throw myself on the mercy of the court and plead guilty to all charges. And the point is....?
:So, we still don't know about Darcy. If he's an N, it makes sense we ought to like him. If he is not (recall Joan pegged him with no N characteristics at all), then why do we like him?
So what's up with this "we" jack? *I* "know about Darcy". *I* 'know' he's a Novel character! [thank you, thank you]
Seriously, I wouldn't simplify this to the point of "if I know his MBTI, then I know why I like him", or "I like him if he's a(n) ....." I suspect there are probably some Ns whom, given the opportunity to meet, I may immediately despise. (Present company excluded, I'm quite sure.)
What I find really fascinating about this particular 'thread' (or more like 'navel lint' for you disinterested in this - I apologize for introducing it):
1) that, according to at least a few analyses, Darcy and Lizzie seem to manifest several opposite personality discriminants. Did Jane Austen knowingly say to herself, "Let's see...I want there to be this undercurrent of both attraction and repulsion, so I'll make Lizzie an extrovert and Darcy an introvert, Lizzie intuitive and Darcy more sensing..." I doubt it. But I find it interesting that Austen and other great writers develop their characters with such insightful intuition that they lend themselves to this type of evaluation, 200 years later. Some may simply observe, "Of course. Opposites attract." Well, maybe so...but maybe not.
2) that the participants on this bboard (I'm inferring) don't merely find something to "like" about Darcy (and Lizzie), but they seem to passionately admire, envy, love, empathize, etc. At least enough to spend a few minutes each day to check this page out and contribute some thought. Is there some type of common bond? What's the common 'force' which holds them enthralled? I doubt this "N-thang" really explains much ... but to me it makes for a pretty interesting speculation.
3) that, more general than just P&P2, how ideas or threads take off in quite unintended directions with unforeseen velocities and force. I thought about MB when Amy commented she wanted to continue the thread on men liking Lizzie, etc. Which just goes to show you never know where one little thought, comment, deed, etc., will lead or what connections will result. Recall the wisdom of Roseanne Roseannadanna: "There's always something..."
: Also in the "what we've learned" department, I think it is interesting that Lizzie is an E and almost all the women here are I's. We identify with her I am sure. I know I do. Maybe she is like we would like to be?
4) that, perhaps there's a lesson like this: maybe we most "identify" with what we're *not*, when we're not what we want to be. And maybe if we recognize this, we can change the way we 'are' to become more what we *want* to be. Change the premise and the resulting behavior will inexorably follow. (I didn't make that up.)
With that, I'll shut up for awhile. Thanks, Amy, for the cerebral stimulation. (Or was it the 17th-32nd ounces of caffeine...)
Regards,
Steve Stockdale

: Just wondering.
My only other cyber-experience is on the general-semantics listserve. I don't know the tekkie talk, but you send your posts to one email address, which then broadcasts it as email to each of the subscribers.
The drawback is that to get the posts, you have to subscribe, which involves nothing more than sending a request. However, you gotta know about it to request it.
The benefit to the web site here, as I see it, is that I stumbled on to it by searching P&P on Alta Vista. Plus, if they worked, having the reference links is really cool.
Some other suggestions/questions:
1. I don't suppose there's a way that I can delete posts I'm not interested in keeping. I assume all editing control rests with Amy.
2. If you/we are going to do this for awhile, it might be nice to have a thread of short bios. On the g.s. listserve this helped - the more information I have about an individual, the easier and more accurately I can evaluate what that person is saying. (Theoretically...)
3. Amy, do you get a hit count? If so, how many are accessing it on average per day?
4. You said you've had this up for about 5 weeks. What happens/ed to those posts which pre-dated the ones which show up now? I assume their buried in the cyber cemetary.
Great job, Amy.

I have to correct myself, it wasn't Jane who announced her engagement
but it was her mother who told Mrs. Philips, who told the neighbors.
Then once the Lucas's told Charlotte, someone had to bring it to Lady
C. attention,I think Charlotte we be happy to tell
Mrs.C because Lizzie was her friend and Lady C. was not her favorite
person. I think Charlotte would be the one who would tell Lady C.
I don't think Mr. Darcy cared what Lady C. thought because Elizabeth
wanted them to remain friends. She made him seek a reconcilation.
This is my thought.

Please don't damn me to hell for posting this message, but I was wondering if anyone would care to sell me a copy of the last episode.
You see, I was taping it and did not catch the whole of it. I know this sounds petty, but I'd rather not shell out the $56 for the "official" copy.
Desperately seeking P&P3.

I like the link part too. Have you tried putting in the whole address including the http:// in the URL box? That feature is one I've never had a problem with. Though I can't understand why it is impossible to do links in the body of the message. Well, I am really just not interested enough to learn that much Perl.

Yes I do have sole and absolute power, but I am willing to share it. Let me know if you want the admin password and URL and I will show you how it works. I guess I don't want to post it here and let some little hacker spoil our fun, but I would be happy to give the reins to a real poster. Just ask.

I have weekly stats:
1st partial week
73
2nd week
294
3rd week
363
4th
426
5th
997
This week with a day and a half to go
807

I didn't think to keep messages from the very beginning, but have almost everything from msg# 80 on. We're up close to 500 now. Joan has looked at them offline with her browser. I think it's an okay way to keep the archives, at least for now. I could make a whole big searchable thing, but it would take a lot of time.
: Great job, Amy.
Thanks.

I understand your dilemma. I also taped the whole series, but ran into problems with the middle episode. So what was I to do? I bought the "official copy"
and I am so glad that I did!! There is approximately 40 extra minutes in the official version that was not shown on A&E. It is terrific! I could probably
make a copy of the the last two tapes for you if you would pay the cost of the tapes and mailing. Let me know if that suits you.

This time I have completely flipped.
I've made some pretty worthless websites, but this one I made yesterday has no value at all that I can see. Still, I seem drawn to the idea.
In need of visual representations of the idea of smallness, word about the joy of smallness, quotes that end with "There it is."

I was lucky enough to get the book the day after the
first episode aired. I also love it! I went back

out - with only 4 on backorder (they'll go fast).
I almost paid $18 for a copy of P&P (hardcover - the
BBC "companion book" - just because it had Colin F (forgot
his last name!) and Jennifer Ehle on the cover! But then,
I hope to be winning them from A&E along with the
Grand Prize Literary tour of England!

: You have a good idea. I will try to remember what else was posted last night that people might wonder about:
: - Arnessa reported that the AUSTEN-L group says JA was an INTJ and so is Darcy. The Darcy score at variance with our own evaluators' opinions
: - A new Joan asked if we thought P&P had a chance at an Emmy. John said "No, it'll go to a broadcast network program as usual." Our other Joan, graciously beginning to call herself Joan, too in view of the new Joan, said she hears Gulliver's Travels is the mini series favorite.

: : You are missing the posts regarding how Lady Catherine could have found out about Darcy's interest in marrying Lizzy. It was noted that the novel itself points to Lizzy determining that the Lucases told the Collinses and the Collinses passed on the info. to Lady Catherine.
Amy, if it is the Lucas's that inform Lady Catherine of the impending engagement, how do they know of it?

Tonight I am off to catch Emma one more time at the theatres. I also rented Sense & Sensibility and Persuasion (the first time they were both available at my video store in a long time) to view in the next couple of days with my fellow Austen afficianados (is that the word?) And who knows in the midst of it all I may tackle P&P2 again. I also am a few chapters away from completing the Persuasion novel.
Just thought I would let you all know.
