so Edmund seized his chance, had Henry knocked over the head and hid somewhere for a month, while Maria supposedly went off with him. He could not protest, because they shipped him to Australia. How's that for paranoid??? :-)
Great plot! Here's another conspiracy idea. Henry visits Maria after a disturbing letter she sends him requiring his company. He arrives, she gets him drunk and she thorws herself at him. He resists because he loves Fanny but she hits him on the head, and places him in a compromising situation (like her bedroom...Oh no!!) He comes too, and she says that they had an affair. He now has no choice but to run away with Maria for he can not show his face to Fanny any more. Edmund pities Fanny like when she was ten years old and decides that he should marry her as a favor, to clear her connection to Henry.....
