Yes, that's it! Edmund's last minute whim was the cause of Henry's ruination and a dozen little pale freaks! It works for me. If only we could believe that Henry could have another chance. This will be harsh for Edmund fans (sorry), but what if, stressed by the sickliness and mal-development of his kids, began to sink under the consumption, and on his death bed, he confessed everything to Fanny, and she pulled a Scarlett O'Hara, "Oh, Edmund, you should have told me years ago you loved Mary and not me!" Edmund continues to ramble on as Fanny enters a ensive state...and turns into...Fanny, Warrior Princess! And goes after Henry!

Another character who is an Edmund/Ashley type is that pathetic fellow in Wuthering Hieghts, the first Linton, who married Catherine. The thing about it is that he (and Nelly) is like the only person I could relate to and I would have been faithful to him. Well. sorry to ramble...
