Edward didn't know Elinor when he proposed to Lucy. He was young, and admittedly stupid. And, he was going to be a man about his mistake and follow through with Lucy anyway - Edmund couldn't do that with Mary, and he actually LOVED her! He didn't even have the same excuse Edward would have had to ditch her, as Edmund was not in love with Fanny.
