To answer your question about 8 Cousins: yes, it is worth reading. It concerns itself with Rose after her father's death, her early relationship with Uncle Alec and meeting Phoebe for the first time, etc. If you enjoyed Rose in Bloom, you will enjoy Eight Cousins. Another Louisa May Alcott book worth notice is her adult novel, A Long Fatal Love Chase. Iit's rather dark, but it is written in LMA's style; also the character in that book is named Rosamond, and there is a chapter entitled "Rose in Bloom", which is rather odd, considering she wrote a book by that title.

I just read Ethan Frome last year and agree with you---that ending gave me a shock, and I thought I was beyond being shocked. Also, there is a movie with Liam Neeson and Joan Allen that is pretty good to watch---they keep to the novel, etc. and the acting is good.

Anyway, hope this input is helpful. :-)
