Y'all all have good points about Edmund and Fanny, and I'm hoping that my next time to read through it, I'll remember that I'm supposed to like them. (It didn't help the second time though.) ;-)
I think the main thing for me is the way they both are just sort of there. Even Elinor Dashwood and Anne Elliot had some wit and spunk; and all the rest of JA's "guys" had a sort of fire--except possibly, perhaps, Edward Ferrars (until the end, when it comes out when he proposes to Elinor). Jane Bennet is not a central enough love character to worry too much about a lack of wittiness. It is almost as though Fanny is a secondary character in her own book!
To each his own, though. I'm just not attracted to Edmund. I like his qualities of character and morals; but JA seems to almost start to reform Henry until the end.
