You're right about Pamela...I continually tried to picture her hiding her numerous letters about her person or keeping such a huge stack from sight. I think that, even though Pamela was ridiculous at times (more often than not) it was worth reading for two reasons: One, (as you mentioned) Jane Austen greatly admired Richardson and undoubtedly read it; and two, it makes reading Shamela and Joseph Andrews even funnier ;-). I agree - that of those I mentioned Evelina was my favorite.

Of course, Jane Austen's epistolary writings are the best (I can't help it...I'm a devoted fan) and I must agree with you that we are quite fortunate she did not use this format on S&S, P&P and the rest!
