I imagine she probably has some money left, just very, very, little. The rooms would have been likely to be relatively inexpensive, too.
And one wouldn't put it past her simply to move out and not pay her bill at the end of her stay--either leaving Mrs.J to pay rather than be nagged constantly or leaving the owner of the house wanting.
What an admirable creature she is!
