Maybe Alicia's gouty husband was satisfied with her promise to never invite LS to the house. She promised that in order to get money, and then went on to say, "I can get you..a nice Drawing Room..." when she wrote to LS in Letter 26.
Or, maybe LS is getting money from Manwaring. (Although, if she were, she'd probably brag about it to Alicia.)
I've started to picture LS as a sort of Scarlett O'Hara type. Absolutely no scruples, causing all sorts of pain for those around her -- but definitely a survivor with will of iron.
