] She doesn't have the proper feelings for Frederica would put it mildly. She is callous and cold and just plain cruel in her treatment of her daughter. Difficult to absorb that sort of abuse.

It's difficult to imagine Jane Austen choosing such a person as the central character in any of her stories. Shows me she had range as a writer.
