Back to the LibraryIt's one of the oddities of American life, lizard, a result of the highly decentralized nature of the American political system. The federal (national) government can not ban books, but state and local governments used to do it rather frequently, although not so much any more in this day age. Not surprisingly, a book that was banned in Boston (a town formerly famous for banning books) would experience an actual increase in sales. The fundamentally elitist and anti-democratic nature of these bans apparently never used to bother any one, but they're seldom attempted any more except by local libraries that try to ban, say, Huckleberry Finn or the Bible occasionally.
