Be fair to Twain. He wasn't the only one denouncing literary figures.
For example Louisa May Alcott said that Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer were immoral books, which they most certainly are not. She even went so far as to say that if Twain couldn't think of anything better to write for the nation's children then he would do better to not write at all.
