] Couldn't agree more. I've tried Patrickm White several times, in particular Voss and find him unreadable, yet he's supposed to be one of Oz's great talents. And now, for the big confession - I find The Hobbit and any of Tolkien's works boring, tedious, turgid and predictable (well, I shouldn't say the last, because I have yet to finish one of his books in spite of many attempts). Millions of people world wide find him totally addictive - what's wrong with me?

I love Tolkien, i really enjoyed The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. I tried to read the Book of Lost Tales and the Silmarillion and I was so bored. Afterwards I found out that he never wrote anything to published except for The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings. All his other papers were published after his death by his son. It made me think about them a little differently.

As far as boring books go The Waterbabies by Charles Kingsley.
That was my bedtime story book when I was little, and both my father and I were asleep within 5 min.
