In fairness to Twain

In response to *fuming* I vow never to read a novel by Mark Twain!!!, written by Chael on October 01, 1998 at 16:20:18

Back to the LibraryI suspect we all have classic writers that we think suck, but that we would never admit to for fear of seeming to be clods. Twain's blind spot, alas, is Jane. My own is Henry James: as far as I'm concerned he's the most over rated writer in the history of the world, bar none. And worse, I had so much looked forward to reading him when I was in college because of his reputation. Try as I might I literally could not get through the first page of The Ambassadors. Absolutely the limpest, most stupefying prose imaginable. But hey, this might be a good topic for discussion. What great writer do YOU think stinks and is unworthy of his/her reputation? Feel free to be vicious.
