I hold Tess a little less responsible

Back to the Library ] If had been in her place I would have taken Alec at his word and accepted the money as payment for past grievances and damages sustained. There was no need for her to go with him.

I could never have accepted a ting from him. He raped her and ruined her life. It seems pretty natural to me that she wouldn't want to owe him anything for fear of what he'd want in return.

] And she was too proud to ask Angel's parents for money, yet she is not so proud that she won't become Alec's mistress. When she was about to accept, I felt like shaking some sense into her! Stupid stupid girl!
...But really, even if at that time she was angry at Angel and thought she would not see him again, she shouldn't have gone with Alec... it was a simply matter of self respect....

I completely agree that she was stupid and should never have gone back to Alec, but I hold Alec more responsible in this than Tess. He had abused her since she met him (though not always in the physical sense). He destroyed her self-confidence and took away the self-respect that she once had. He told her that Angel would never come back to her, and she thought so little of herself that she believed him. Of course, that doesn't make what she did right, but I think it makes her less culpable.

] PS: would you believe that the cover blurb said that Tess' seduction would lead to murder... if that is not telling the whole story!

I'm so sorry!!! I HATE when they do that!!!
