I think that Hardy wrote her with a 'self-destruct' button, in the days before such things were considered possible. If this was a twentieth century story, we would easily believe that, wouldn't we? If Hardy were writing it today, he'd probably have included some psychobabble to explain it.But he didn't know any- this is before Freud and Jung and all that.So he just sort of describes it, without giving it any logical, explainable form.
