But he also felt guilt and responsibility ... I think the hardship he endured in Brazil made him re-order his priorities... what was important before was not longer so. I also think that the fear to lose her had something to do with his acceptance of her even after her affair with Alec and the murder. And I think Tess was right, in the end he would have despised her... not for the first original thing, but for the second one.
Besides, the days he spent in search of her must have tought him things in relation to her character that he had failed to notice before.
