I don't know that Alec really was converted. I wouldn't be at all suprised that it was all only skin deep, this is shown by his reaction when he meets Tess again.
Tess is often about fate, her father discovering the family connection, the horse dieing, Tess being bundled off to Alec's house, his seduction of her, the birth and death of the baby, meeting Angel, going to work on that terrible farm etc. If you notice, Alec is "converted" by non other than Angel's father, coincidence? It's all part of Hardy's big plan.
