Older heroines

Back to the LibraryI am not particularly fond of the Heyer books with the beautiful ingenue, either. Try the following for older, almost on the shelf, heroines:

Lady of Quality
Frederica
The Reluctant Widow
Black Sheep
Nonesuch (already mentioned)
The Unknown Ajax

These are all fun. Yes, there is some repetition of themes in a few of them, but they are different enough to entertain.

Another novel you might enjoy is Sylvester. Although the heroine is quite young, she's not at all a beautiful ingenue but a much more interesting type.

If your public library carries them, try getting some of the Heyer books on tape. Lady of Quality and Frederica were very, very well done.
