Hardy can be a bit of a misery, although I wouldn't call Far from the Madding Crowd a tragedy, it ends optimistically after all the pathos. Hardy, however, is quite capable of being funny. His novels Three (or is it Two? Anyway,)Noble Dames is very funny, as is Under the Greenwood Tree which I once accidently picked up when I was looking for The Woodlanders, the most miseralbe of all of the novels I've read.
