] Not having read the book, I venture to ask another question. In the recent adaptation Tess' mother tells her not to tell anyone about the rape and indicates she hasn't told her father everything. My hypothetical question is then - What would have happened if Tess had done what her Mother suggested and she hadn't told Angel? Should she have listened to her mother?
But he would have found out on their wedding night that she was not a virgin. So she would have either have had to tell him after the consummation or lie, neither of which would have been in keeping with Tess' character...
