Not having read the book, I venture to ask another question. In the recent adaptation Tess' mother tells her not to tell anyone about the rape and indicates she hasn't told her father everything. My hypothetical question is then - What would have happened if Tess had done what her Mother suggested and she hadn't told Angel? Should she have listened to her mother?
