Back to the Library ] so far is the reddleman (I wish I remembered his name right now) in The Return to the Native... he migh be a secondary character but most of his actions are decisive to the story... I like how he tries to makes things easier for Thomasin (sp?) and the way he is determined not to let Eustacya (BTW, I wonder where he picked up those names, agh!) steal Wildeve from her.

His name is Diggory Venn. I think he also was in love with Thomasin himself, wasn't he? He is being heroic, for he loves her and it is very clear to everyone, including Thomasin's aunt and Wildeve himself, that Damon and Thomasin are wrong for each other.
