] ] Quote from letter IV:As a very distinguished flirt I have always been taught to consider her, but it has fallen in my way to hear some particulars of her conduct at Langford, which prove that she does not confine herself to that sort of honest flirtation which satisfies most people, ... Therein he refers to himself as a very distinguished flirt but of the honest kind, not the type to make anyone miserable. He longs to see her and form his own idea of those bewitching powers ... I don't think he expected to be beguiled by her. He felt he was prepared to be a curious onlooker.

] (As Jacque says,) I read the first sentence to be talking about LSusan, but I completely agree with the second part of what you're saying, that he does not expect her be able to take him in (because he know her for what she is).

On re-reading that letter with this in mind, I believe now that the "flirt" part was talking about LS. Considering everything else we know of Reginald, I don't think he is a flirt. It would be great if he were a "love 'em and leave 'em" type, in this case, mind you, but he's not. He's blind.
