In response to jerk or another victim of fate?, written by Jane on September 22, 1998 at 12:50:36

Back to the Library ] Angel came close to being a nice man. Hardy let him fall in love with someone without regard for her lower social status, and then marry her. I had the sense that Angel really saw and valued some of the inner loveliness of Tess, not just her beauty. Then he really blows it. Why? Is Angel supposed to be a sympathetic character, just torn by his beliefs after been brought up in a religious family? Or does Hardy mean for him to be a jerk?

I think Hardy meant for him to be a flawed human being, which he is. I take his betrayal of Tess much more to heart than Alec's exactly because Angel came so close to being a good guy. I didn't expect anything but abuse and sorrow from Alec, but I expected more from Angel.

Yes, he is buffeted by fate as is Tess, but his pain is caused as much by his own actions and choices as by "Fate." And really, the same with Tess, if we're going to get right down to it...
