In response to not ALWAYS miserable, written by Chael on September 18, 1998 at 22:05:28
] ] 1) I basically never read Hardy because he's always so miserable.
] Did you ever read Far from the Madding Crowd? It is one of my favorite novels, and it was written before Hardy got so glum. You might like that one.
yes, I have. I meant 'read' in the present tense. I do not read him because he is so miserable. However, I like his poetry.
The problem I have with Hardy is partly because I grew up with him, just as I did with Jane Austen. I know Casterbridge like the back of my hand, and Emminster, and the Valley of the Great Dairies, and the Valley of the Little Daries, and Stonehenge, and, and...Lulwind Cove, and Abbots Cernal, and I guess I have just been avoiding him for the last twenty years. Whenever someone mentions Hardy, I think "Oh, no, not again!"
Sorry for the rant. It's not aimed at you, Chael. I guess I just needed to say it. I suppose I should just stay out of this, really, and let you guys get on with it! :-(
- no problem!! :-) Chael 23:44:09 9/23/98 (0)
