Greek Tragedy , morality plays and the old ways

Hardy did study Greek Tragedy. He also had severe doubts about his Christian Faith. Tess is very like the old morality plays, and also like all the old 'ballads' that Mrs Durbeyfield keeps singing. Hardy was definitely incorporating some of the 'old ways' into his style, not just using them to illustrate the story he was telling.
