Maybe those who appreciate a "sad" story can do so because they have endured more personal sadness in their own lives(?).

I know what you mean about teenagers (no offense intended to any teenage readers of this post). :-)
My teenage brother who is 15 was rather difficult last week and it wasn't really the most pleasant week I've spent in a while; I lost several hours of sleep last week deciding how to deal with him. I'm hoping this week will be more boring and eventful.
