] But the book itself, as a 'read', is dead.
I really like this novel even though it is admittedly very depressing. Might you be encouraged to read on? There is also something uplifting about Tess and her purity of spirit right up until the fateful end. I did not feel this way about the movie "Jude" based on Hardy's "Jude the Obscure" - now that was depression to the hilt! I have not read the novel and probably should in order to get an accurate impression of the story. With Tess, especially in the adaptation, there is a sort of inner-peace portrayed by her in the end; a sort of quiet and happy resignation.....And I should probably reserve the rest of my comments until we have reached that point in the reading! ;-)
