This is my first Hardy read. Like you, somehow I've known the plot line or at least knew that Hardy was very depressing and so never took the time to read it. But I have been enjoying this read. I like his descriptions of the land and his analogies, the emotions of his characters feel real, very beautiful writing.
I, too, toyed with the idea of stopping reading after the virtview, but several people mentioned things in the book not in the movie and that has made me continue, and I'm glad I have, but it is still hard to go back and discuss things pre-wedding...
The problem, of course, is the timing... We didn't get the date of the Virtview showing til it was too late to get the book finished before it began. Oh well, we'll try to be better at that the next time. ;-)
