Back to the LibraryAnother book to look at (if it's still in print) is "The Seven Per-Cent Solution", by Nicholas Meyer. It's definitely an interesting story, and while it isn't Doyle, it's about as close as you'll get. It involves Holmes' life becoming so threatened by his cocaine addiction (hence the title--he mentions in "Sign of the Four" that he uses a seven per-cent solution of cocaine and water) that Watson takes him to Vienna to be cured by Sigmund Freud. It's a really neat idea, and the ending suggests that Freud's theory about boys sleeping with their mothers should be changed to accomodate mathematics tutors. Also worth considering is the film, which was shown on Bravo earlier this year, and will probably be shown again. It isn't as good as the book (as many movies are prone to do). The coolest thing is the all-star cast, which includes Robert Duvall as Watson (with a very convincing British accent), Sir Lawrence Olivier as Moriarity, Alan Arkin as Freud, and Vanessa Redgrave as one of his patients (the character's name escapes me). I wouldn't recommend it for discussion here, but more for pleasure reading. Just a thought...
